GRAVE OF WARRIOR QUEEN IDENTIFIED ON ARTHURIAN ISLAND

According to Cornish folklore, the Isles of Scilly, located off Land's End, are the remnants of the sunken land of Lyonesse, which is associated with various Arthurian figures, such as Tristram and Lancelot. However, the mythical connections to Lyonesse date back to pre-Roman times when the island was thought to be the Celtic equivalent of the Amazonian island featured in the Wonder Woman films. In Brythonic tradition, Lyonesse was said to be the home of warrior women led by Queen Domnu, after whom the regional Dumnonii tribe is believed to have been named.

Although Greek and Roman accounts mention warrior queens among the Britons, and archaeological evidence has shown the existence of islands dedicated to high-status Celtic women, sceptics have doubted whether such an island existed off the coast of Cornwall. However, a 2000-year-old Iron Age grave located on the southern end of Bryher, one of the Scilly Islands, has revealed a significant discovery. The grave, previously believed to belong to a king, has now been identified as that of a woman, buried with a sword and shield.

Recent scientific techniques have revealed that just before the Roman invasion, a warrior queen seems to have ruled the Scilly Isles. This discovery has led archaeologists to initiate a new excavation at a previously unexcavated Late Iron Age graveyard. The exact location of this site is currently being kept confidential. Researchers aim to determine whether other warrior women inhabited the islands during ancient times.

☀️🐾 A perfect Cornish day at Porthkidney Beach 🐾☀️

Today we took Snoopy for a lovely stroll along Porthkidney Beach, near Lelant in Cornwall. Tucked away close to the local garden centre, this beautiful stretch of golden sand is one of Cornwall’s hidden gems. 🌊✨

We enjoyed a relaxing walk along the shoreline towards Carbis Bay, taking in the stunning coastal views, before heading back along the top of the dunes. From there, you can catch glimpses of the wonderfully scenic St Erth to St Ives branch railway line, with its trains winding their way along one of the most picturesque routes in the country. 🚂💙

If you’re planning a visit to Cornwall, Porthkidney Beach is definitely worth adding to your list – especially if you enjoy peaceful beaches, spectacular views, and dog-friendly adventures.

We hope you enjoy the photos, and we hope to see some of you down here in beautiful Cornwall soon! ☀️🏖️🐶

“Our home and workshop… over 100 years ago? 🤯📸

We were recently sent this amazing photograph and couldn’t believe our eyes. The stonework and frontage look remarkably familiar!

Can anyone recognise the entrance as it is today, or tell us anything about the people and trade pictured here?

We feel incredibly lucky that this piece of history has found its way back home. ❤️”

🚗✨ Busy day here at the Old Workshop today!

Not only did we welcome some lovely new guests, they arrived in this absolutely stunning vintage Ford… and honestly, how could we not stop for a photo opportunity? 😄📸

It’s also been another brilliant day for Cornwall Open Studios with a steady flow of visitors coming through the doors to explore the studios and meet the artists.

If you’re in the area over the next few days, do pop by the Old Workshop in Drift and say hello 👋
We’re delighted to have Jeremy Sanders and Susan Allanson in residence showcasing their beautiful work. 🎨🏺

A perfect excuse for a little countryside wander, some inspiring art… and who knows what interesting vehicles might turn up next! 😄☀️

Never a dull moment outside our window here at The Old Workshop Drift — especially during the summer months! 🚜☀️

Today we had a whole convoy of tractors rumbling past the house on what looked like some sort of rally… definitely a first for us! Usually it’s runners, cyclists, or adventurers taking on Land’s End to John O’Groats (or the other way round!) that we spot passing by, so this certainly added a bit of countryside charm to the day.

One thing we do love here is that there’s always something going on in West Cornwall.

If you fancy a stay with us this summer, we still have some availability in both our self-contained one-bedroom cottage and our guest rooms.

Please do consider booking direct through our website for the best rates:

What a wonderful first day it’s been for 🩵💎🪼🐠🦋

It’s been so lovely today seeing so many of you amazing artists and makers across Cornwall opening your doors, welcoming visitors, sharing your creativity and enjoying the start of this year’s event.

After a very busy day myself, it was such a treat to finally sit down for a moment and catch up watching all your reels, photos and stories across social media. Honestly… you’ve all inspired me so much and made it so worthwhile…and we are hoping to get out and visit as many of you as we can in the time we have

I’m incredibly proud to be part of this wonderful creative community and very grateful for all the kindness, patience and support you show me while I hopefully help deal with your questions, enquiries and the behind-the-scenes chaos that comes with organising an event like this 🙏

Thank you all for making Cornwall Open Studios so special. Here’s to an amazing week ahead filled with visitors, conversations, creativity and hopefully lots of sales too! ❤️🎨🏺✨
