Just 4 miles away from Pickering with good shopping, restaurants and takeaways, leisure centre and swimming pool, and the famous North York Moors Steam Railway. Goathland, renowned as Heartbeat’s ’Aidensfield’, is just 7 miles away, and Flamingo Land Theme Park and Eden Camp, a Second World War museum, are both within 10 miles. Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall are within 15 miles as is the coast at Whitby.

Fox & Rabbit Inn, near Lockton.
After the end of WW2, German Prisoners of War, did not return home immediately, but stayed at Eden Camp in Malton, of lived on farms in the local area where they were given work. Here a party of men are clearing snow from the Pickering to Whitby Road. This was known as Snow Cutting and was also given to men out of work. The man opening his lunch box is Mr Ted Hitchcock who worked for Potts Builders, and would be laid off due to the bad weather. Behind him is AA. Patrolman Mr Tom Hodgson. Both men are from Pickering. The photographer is unknow, and the date was given as 1947.
