In the Autumn of 2011 we started work extending and renovating our remaining two lodges . We decided to make these semi detached and include a 1 bedroom unit and a two bedroom unit. A lot of thought went into the design so that the decks would all be south westerly facing to get the best out of the evening sun.
In November 2011 we were granted planning permission to put in 8 lodges on the waterside. it had taken 4 and a half years and an awful lot of meeting planning applications etc to get this.
The children were growing up.Isaac had started nursey and the girls were enjoing their time at St Josephs school.
We got 2 dairy goats Arry and Bert who were super friendly

Late summer 2010 we started work the first of our 3 tired lodges . Planning for these had started 3 years earlier but eventually it came through .Little did we know the winter of 2010-2011 was going to be really cold and snowy .New roads and parking were added and a second entrance .
We moved the existing lodge on rails and constructed a slab and walls to sit it on and then moved the lodge back .We then doubled the size of the existing unit and completely redid the interior . This is now our woodsman 3 lodge and had its fist guests May 2011
Fortunately my dad had years of experience building things and pushed it along.

September 2009 saw us start on our largest project. The old conservatory was demolished so breakfasts were temporarily served in our living room. Footings were dug and we built a new kitchen extension,laundry and conservatory. One of the b and b rooms was converted to create a guest reception and sitting area with log burner.Once completed we moved out of the old kitchen and turned that and our laundry into 2 double b and b rooms completing them for the June 2010. Emily joined her sister at school

2008 we had planned a third child and on new years day discoverd sarah was pregnant . Over that summer she found it hard to make up the bunk beds and slipping between the breakfast tables serving breakfast involved more planning and different routes.. Isaac was born in the September completing our family. Over the summer our two new rooms had proved really popular so we made the decision to convert the one bedroom cottage into two more rooms. As the builders were here we also added our cabin room taking our b and b to 9 rooms sleeping 22.

2007 we started builing two new rooms a family room and a double room with a four poster bed (these were subsequently converted intoto a 2 bedroom self catering lodge in 2022). We also revamped the car park with raised beds and a lot of planting.
In September Sarah and I got married and Abigail started School.
In the December we had our honeymoon in Tenerife with the girls.

𝟐𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐨 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲. 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟔
My dad Alan, partner (now my wife) Sarah , daughters Abigail(age 1) and Emily (age 0) and I embarked on a new adventure in our lives when we took over Barker Stakes Farm, a 4 bedroom bed and breakfast with a holiday cottage and 3 very dated lodges. None of us had any experience in the holiday industry or farming so it was a steep learning curve.
My dad was a fan of river cottage (the tv series ) so we embarked on creating a small holding as well as modernising the business. We purchased some animals, chickens,dexter cows, pigs , goats , sheep ,turkeys and geese, over the years which were all enjoyable.
We set about modernising the property and expanding the business .In our first year we used a room in the house taking our room stock to 5.
𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟕 we gave the old lodges a mini refurb. They still were not great but it was all we could do at the time. Sarah and I were married in the September.
𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟖 saw the addition of a family room and a double room on the courtyard on the site of an existing outbuilding. As well as an addition to the family. Isaac, our youngest, arrived in September.
𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟗, due to the popularity of our 2 new rooms, we made the decision to convert the one bedroom cottage into a family room and another double. We also added a studio room in a timber lodge down by the animals with a log burner which was really popular.
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟎 was a busy year. The additional rooms meant the existing kitchen and old conservatory were struggling to keep up with the breakfast rush. A decision was made to build a new kitchen , conservatory and laundry which really helped the operation. The old kitchen and laundry were turned into 2 more ensuite rooms.
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟏 & 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟐 we embarked on a full rebuild of our existing lodges creating 2 one bedroom lodges, 2 two bedroom lodges , and a 3 bedroom lodge.
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟑 started off well .We dug a large pond where the waterside lodges now stand .My brother bought a holiday complex local to us and my mum moved to Pickering to be nearer to us . Unfortunately my dad became unwell and we lost him in the December.
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟒 We were finally able to start the waterside lodges part of the site after years of working with the planning department and added 2 two bedroom lodges - lodges 7 and 8. We also built a new playpark and games barn.
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟓 we sold the top field and with the money and yet another loan were able to add the waterside gold and silver lodges.
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟔 we had removed a metal clad building and replaced it with a single lodge which initially we ran as a B&B room but is now a self-catering family Studio.
𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟖 we added 2 new 2-bedroom lodges on the site of the old tractor yard; the Paddock Gold lodges.
𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 we replaced an ageing lodge next to the play park which is now Parkside Lodge. We also made the decision to close the bed and breakfast part of our business and go fully self catering.
𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐 saw us finish the conversion of the B&B rooms into 5 self-catering cottages.
𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 after 3 years of planning we opened our 6 glamping pods.
𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐲𝐨𝐮 - We would like to thank all of the customers and staff who have supported our journey over the last 20 years as without you none of this would have been possible.
𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬 - We still have planning for some more lodges on the field where the goalposts are and need to replace lodges 7 and 8.
Over the coming days I will add some photos we have taken over the last 20 years . I look a lot older and fatter , our kids have grown up a lot and Sarah still looks a lot younger than I do.

Great for families this is our largest 2 bedroom lodge situated adjacent to the playpark . The modern open plan living area has a vaulted ceiling .The living area has two sofas , a 55″ smart tv and a corner dining table. The fully equipped kitchen includes oven, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge and freezer. The patio doors lead out onto private decking with your own hot tub .The master bedroom has a king size bed and en suite shower room. The second bedroom has twin beds and there is a family bathroom.
Beds are made up for your arrival with one bath towel and one hand towel per guest. (You may like to bring extra towels for hot tub lodges)
A maximum of 2 well behaved dogs are welcome (charge of £15 per dog per stay)

On our site come and see our friendly farm animals, alpacas, goats, ponies, rabbits & guinea pigs. Take a stroll through the Orchard, past the stables and down by the pond where you will find an abundance of wildlife, ducks, moorhens and even the odd swan or heron.
You can let your children run off some energy on our 2 play parks with slides, swings and climbing net. For the athletic among you football is available on the field. You will find table tennis, table football and pool in the games barn .
We also have 800 yards of trout/grayling fly fishing onsite (close season 1st October to 24th March).
We are a family orientated business and cots and high-chairs can be provided upon request.
Pickering is the Gateway to the moors and our location is an ideal base for trips to both the North York Moors and the coastal [towns of Whitby and Scarborough. There are some great places to eat nearby .Flamingoland, the North York Moors railway and Dalby forest with its walking and cycle tracks are less than 10 minutes in the car. If you are into history head for Eden camp, Castle Howard or historic cars at Mathewson’s (aka bangers and cash at Thornton le dale.

Our glamping pods will sleep up to 2 adults and two children.
There is a double bed and a set of bunk beds suitable for children up to 12. The shower room has a shower sink and toilet. The kitchen area has a hob, airfryer ,microwave ,fridge freezer and a sink. There is a two seater sofa and a small table and chairs.
There is an electric heater preset at 21c
Externally their is a patio with table and chairs.
All bedding and towels are provided.
