Training for the Winter Olympics in 2030 😊. We need a prolonged cold spell to get a safe depth of ice on the lochan for outdoor curling but when it happens it is superb 😁. Each freeze brings its own characteristic to the ice, sometimes incredibly smooth but more often quite lumpy which means deliveries often need to be β€œcreative”. πŸ˜‚

At any time of the year there is always something to look out for and conditions are perfect for this beautiful hair ice to make an appearance now.

To form, the temperature needs to be just slightly below 0 Β°C and if often forms on fallen dead but moist beech branches. It is caused by the presence of a specific fungus called Exidiopsis effusa. When water present in the wood freezes it creates a barrier that traps liquid between the ice and the pores of the wood. This creates a suction force which pushes water out of the pores to the edge of the ice surface where it freezes and extends outwards. As this repeats it pushes a thin β€˜hair’ of ice out of the wood which is around 0.01 mm in diameter.

Thanks to Met Office for the detailed info.

After a few nights of raiding the hanging feeders for peanuts, a larger base on the red squirrel and pine marten feeder gave this youngster enough room to finally work out how to lift the lid πŸ˜‚.”

πŸ”ŠSound OnπŸ”‰As we come to the end of the Rut, listen to the roars which have echoed round the hills here at this time of year during the breeding season when the mature stags roar, and on occasion fight, to see off any rivals trying to steal some hinds.🦌
