East Shilvinghampton Farm has been in the Bartlett family for four generations and is still a working farm, supplying local businesses (such as the local gastro pub) with high quality meat. Living and working in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the family delight in being able to welcome guests to enjoy the farm and it’s spectacular views for themselves. Well, here we are… 😊

It’s been quite a week… and yes, we’re aware it’s only Monday! 😆
But as anyone in farming will tell you, you dust yourself off and keep going.

And one of the things we’re very much still excited about is this.

Your Setl.

Eight beautifully designed, privately owned cabins here on the farm, created for people who want their own little piece of the Dorset countryside to escape to whenever they like.

Not a holiday let. Not somewhere you book for a weekend. Your own cabin, in your own spot, here at Shilvington.

We’ve put a huge amount into getting these off the ground and we’d really love to find the people who can picture themselves here.

Farming isn’t easy most days, but today has been harder than most.

After 17 years in partnership with a company, we’ve received the news that they have gone bankrupt. To make matters harder, we haven’t been paid for our busiest months. All guests who arrived at the end of July, August and September, we have not received your payments.

For our farming family, this is a huge blow. Glamping has been a vital income, helping us keep our farm going.

We’re not giving up, but we need your help.

Our glamping is still open, and every booking, share and recommendation will make a real difference as we try to recover some of what we’ve lost.

The seasons are changing, but before we welcome autumn, here’s a little recap of the last few weeks on the farm 🍂

From sunny days and alpaca adventures to cosy sauna sessions and all the little moments in between. We’ve been making the most of the last of summer! 🤎

It’s your first 24 hours at Shilvington… go! 😀

Drop your bags at your Feather Down tent or the holiday cottage, pull on your walking boots and head out. There are plenty of lovely routes straight from the farm, so the hardest part might be deciding which way to go. 😅

Back to Shilvington for a session in The Cozy Cow, followed by a good pub supper and an evening by the fire.

Next morning, breakfast supplies from our very well-stocked honesty shop, a potter around the farm and then off to meet Henry and the gang for an alpaca walk. 🦙

And that’s only your first 24 hours…

Henry and the Alpacas 🦙

When Henry was 13, he came to us with a request.

“The girls have ponies. I’d like an alpaca.”

We told him to do some research and find out what he could actually do with one. He duly came back with a plan – he could offer alpaca walks and make himself a bit of money!

And that was that.

Henry took to it straight away and before long decided it would be lovely to get some girls and have some babies (cria, as we quickly learnt!).

There have been some real ups and downs over the years. Losing some of them has been incredibly hard, but on the whole Henry has absolutely loved it and found looking after them hugely rewarding.

He's (nearly!) 21 now and, while he's still at home, they're very much still his alpacas. He looks after them himself and leads the walks – and he knows every single one of them inside out. Not just as animals, but as individuals, with all their different personalities and quirks.

An alpaca walk with Henry is a genuinely wonderful experience. What started with a 13-year-old thinking it was a bit unfair that his sisters had ponies has become a rather special part of Shilvington. 😊🦙
