I have spent 4 days this week turning an old, stained-wood hall, stairs and landing into something much lighter and more modern looking. I painted all the walls last year and this year my customer decided to ask me to tackle the woodwork. I hate spindles!! The banister was stripped back to bare wood then re-varnished with 2 coats of Ronseal Dark Oak to try to match it with the original colour - not a bad match. All the spindles, front door and surround and large panelled cupboards under the stairs were sanded, cleaned, undercoated then had Leyland White oil-based Eggshell paint put on them. Ideally I would apply another coat but she was on a budget and happy with the way it looked. I'm sure you'll agree that it looks much brighter and fresher. Have I mentioned that I hate spindles!!! Unfortunately, my job next week also involves spindles and just the woodwork of a hall, stairs and landing but at least they are already white. ;-)
