Wet belt engines use a timing belt that runs inside the engine oil. Over time, the belt material can degrade in the hot oil, especially if the wrong oil is used or service intervals are missed as seen in the image below. As the belt breaks down, rubber particles can block the oil pickup and reduce lubrication, potentially causing severe engine damage or complete engine failure. Replacing a wet belt is also more complex than replacing a conventional dry timing belt, because much of the engine must be dismantled!
