“You Really Don’t Want to Visit Wales…”

Reverse psychology can be a powerful marketing technique. Instead of telling people why they should buy, book or visit, you playfully suggest that perhaps they shouldn’t.

It sounds completely backwards—and that is precisely why it can work.

People scroll through endless predictable marketing messages:

“Book now.”

“Don’t miss out.”

“Visit us.”

“We have something for everyone.”

After a while, they become background noise. Reverse psychology interrupts that familiar pattern. A hook such as, “You really don’t want to visit Wales…” feels unexpected, slightly mischievous and almost impossible to ignore.

The reader wonders: Why not?

That moment of curiosity is the disruption angle. It stops the scroll because the message does not follow the usual advertising formula. The brain notices something out of place and wants to resolve the contradiction.

Psychologically, it also plays on something called reactance. We resist being told what to do, particularly when we feel someone is trying to sell to us. Tell people they must visit somewhere and they may instinctively pull away. Suggest it might not be for them, and they are more likely to investigate and decide for themselves.

We recently used this approach for Rhosydd Bach Holiday Cottages:

“You really don’t want to visit Wales if you dislike…”

* Quiet cafĂŠs without endless queues
* Beaches where you can find space for yourself
* Peaceful stretches of the coastal path
* Empty hills and open landscapes
* Cottages surrounded by nature and seclusion

Of course, every supposed “negative” was actually one of the strongest reasons to visit. That is the key: the playful negative must reveal a genuine customer benefit. For Rhosydd Bach, that means peace, space and the slower pace of the Llŷn Peninsula, presented without sounding like another conventional holiday advert.

There is, however, a word of caution.

Reverse psychology works because it is unusual. Use it too frequently and the surprise disappears. It can quickly feel gimmicky, predictable or even manipulative. It must also be playful and unmistakable. If the opening is too negative, people may take it literally and scroll past before reaching the point.

Think of it as seasoning rather than the entire meal. Used occasionally, with humour and a clear understanding of your audience, reverse psychology can disrupt the scroll, spark curiosity and make a familiar marketing message feel refreshingly different.

Sometimes, telling people not to look is the quickest way to make sure they do.

Met up with extremly talented person, Simon Ranshaw this week, he was doing a shoot on a property locally and I was invited along to see how it all works.

I have known Simon for a while through the world of hospitality , met a few times but never seen him in action. We had a good chat , a lovely coffee down at Nant Gwrtheyrn.

What an eyeopener, such attention to detail and a very advanced set up, including the latest cameras and lenses, remote controlling via an iPad, there was even an iMac on site , as part of his kit, as well as fresh bread, pancakes, fresh fruit as props- no plastic stuff with this guy.

If you ever want some property work done, this is the guy, I’ve heard he is one of the best in the industry but after spending a few hours with him, I am certain he IS the best in the industry.

Simon will be coming on to my Thursday night hospitality call very soon, come along and learn about his journey and pick up some tips.

Weak Verbs Describe. Strong Verbs Move People.

The words you choose matter, especially when writing social media hooks and calls to action.

Strong verbs add energy, confidence and purpose. Instead of asking someone to “try” something, invite them to “discover”, “master” or “transform” it.

Your hook should stop the scroll:

“Uncover five ways to improve your content.”

Your call to action should clearly guide the reader:

“Download the guide”, “Book your place” or “Start today.”

But don’t use complicated words simply to sound clever. “Use” can sometimes be clearer and stronger than “leverage”.

Choose active, natural words that tell people exactly what to do next.

Because action words drive action.

Don’t Write Off the Humble Business Card

Rhosydd Bach Holidays go through at least 20 business cards every week between all 4 of their cottages.

It may sound old-fashioned in the age of email marketing, QR codes, social media and digital everything—but business cards still work.

Guests pick them up. They put them in handbags, wallets, cars and kitchen drawers. They pass them to friends, family members and work colleagues who are looking for somewhere to stay.

And that is the interesting bit: where do all those cards eventually end up?

A guest may forget the name of your cottage or struggle to find your Facebook post again, but a card sitting on their fridge or noticeboard can bring them straight back to you. It can also introduce your business to somebody who has never heard of you.

It is simple, physical and inexpensive advertising that can keep working long after a guest has gone home.

Yes, use the QR code. Build your email list. Post regularly on social media. But don’t assume that traditional marketing has stopped working just because digital marketing has arrived.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are still some of the most effective.

So, if you have a holiday cottage, a hairdresser, a pub, a shop or whatever type of business, make sure you leave a good pile of business cards where people can see them —and make sure your customers know they are welcome to take one.
