Last week I went out to a couple of paddocks to advise on the presence of poisonous plants in the field and hedgerow so they could treat and fully prepare the field before using it as grazing.

Present on the perimeter were several clumps of cuckoo pint, see below.

I followed up my visit with a lengthy report and guide on treating the field for poisonous plants and being vigilant to any new ones further on in the season.

The nettles are starting to flower and go to seed so we have been scything them in the horse's field to reduce the chance of them spreading their seeds. Horses usually like wilted nettles, so we left the weeds for them to pick through.

When you discover that the clump of nettles in the field is hiding some giant hemlock! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Gloves on, hemlock pulled up and disposed of, nettles scythed to give access to the hemlock, and that area fenced off in case any dropped leaves were overlooked. ๐Ÿช“

If you are unfortunate enough to have a nettle infested paddock, now is the time to cut them. Horses can safely eat cut nettles, and by cutting them down before they flower and go to seed reduces their spread and gives more space for grass to grow.

Happy New Year!

It's been a bit quiet on here since the autumn, mainly because there's not much grassland management to do in the winter!

But now days are getting longer and, believe it or not, the waterlogged fields will start to dry out.

If you need assistance planning your field management for the year then I'm here to help. Whether it's measuring up for a track system, taking a soil analysis to decide which fertiliser to apply in spring, or planning the rest and rotation of paddocks, I can help.

Please message this page or WhatsApp 07858420228 with any enquiries โ˜บ๏ธ

Who fertilises their fields in the spring?

Do you use the same fertiliser each year? Do you purchase the standard 16:16:16 fertiliser?

Did you know that different plants deplete the soil of different elements? And different types of soil have different levels of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus? It's important to keep these three elements balanced to maximise grass yield.

Get ahead of the game this autumn and get your soil tested for pH, N, P and K levels so that in the spring you can apply the correct type of fertiliser as soon as the weather is favourable in the spring.

Contact me to get a basic soil analysis conducted and a short explanatory report with recommendations for the correct fertiliser to apply in the spring. ยฃ30 if booked during October.

Some recent feedback from a client, for whom I assessed her 7 acres and drew up a calendar for treating each field individually and at appropriate times to allow her to continue grazing the rest of the land.

Thank you for the report Susy. It was very comprehensive and clear on what the next steps are for me to improve the fields. Especially as each field has a different requirement. This didnt even cross my mind and I would have systematically treated them all the same! Here's to continued land improvement and happy horses :)

It's been a busy couple of weeks visiting several fields, taking soil samples, and writing reports on how to improve the grazing in each field over the next year ๐Ÿ˜„
