Thank you for the support. Out of 4 jobs I went to today, one was a recommendation from an old customer, two were old customers and one was a new enquiry from my most recent advert. I keep doing what I do. Opening windows and doors that can't be opened, closing windows and doors that can't be closed, changing misted up or broken glass and generally making older double glazing work like it should.

Oh God I'm old. On the 15th January my eldest will be 40 years old. On the 6th February 1986 I walked into my then father in law's double glazing business as a trainee I don't know what. I'm sure he sacked at least one person to create a pretend job for me. I made windows, I did surveys, I fitted, I found my niche in sales but I also did a lot of processing orders for the factory and checking paperwork to make sure that 1120mm x 1130mm hadn't been processed as 1130mm x 1120mm. Occasionally I get asked to repair a window or door that the company I worked for 40 years ago fitted. Oh God I'm old.

30 diamond leaded sealed units replaced with new energy saving plain glass units. The customer is very happy with the extra light and says that the windows look bigger. It may take a while for the family to get used to the brand new look of the house and remember which house is theirs.

I would like to apologise to tomorrow's customers. The water is off in West Reading. I can manage to wash with wet wipes but I might be a bit grumpy if I haven't had my coffee.

Has anyone got any suggestions as what I could or should be doing with old double glazed sealed units? They are very difficult if not practically impossible to recycle. Being made up of different materials glass recyclers would want the sealant, metal or composite spacer bars and edging tape completely removed and the edges cleaned. If someone has the time and space they can be split, cleaned and cut down (as long as they're not toughened glass). Unfortunately during that process you may break the glass or cut yourself and ultimately you will end up with potentially scratched second hand glass that isn't really worth much to anyone. uPVC and aluminium window frames can be and usually are recycled but used glass, particularly misted up double glazing is very difficult to do anything with. It's a shame there isn't some big machine that grinds it all up, melts it down and separates it into the different components. Maybe someone needs to invent one.

Has the company that fitted your windows and doors gone out of business? Has the guarantee on your windows and doors run out? I've had another week of changing broken window hinges to keep noise and draughts out, replacing misted up and broken glass sealed units and replacing window and door locks and handles and making adjustments to make doors work like new. With even small windows costing hundreds of pounds and very little change out of £1000 for a basic uPVC door I think I'm doing my bit to help when money's tight and keeping a lot of perfectly good window frames and doors out of landfill.

Another happy customer. Misted up sealed units replaced in four windows, new handles for 2 windows and new hinges for a window that the customer has put tape around to cover the gaps for several years. All for a lot less than the price of one new window. Don't replace perfectly good window frames when the glass, hinges, handles and locks can all be made as good as new.

With energy prices going through the roof there has never been been a better time to make sure that your windows and doors are doing what they are supposed to do. (Keeping the cold out and your heat in). Hinges, handles and locks can be repaired or replaced. Broken down sealed units can be replaced and even old double glazing can be upgraded to have the latest high specification, energy efficient glazing. Over 35 years of working on Upvc and aluminium windows and doors. Replacing misted up sealed units, broken hinges, handles and locks. In some cases all of those things in one house. Very few old double glazed windows can't be saved and I can even upgrade the glass to "A Rated". For a free quote call or message me today.
