The unglamorous side of running DIY Kitten… but I wouldn’t have it any other way! 🛠️

Been a bit quiet on here lately… mainly because I’ve been up to my eyeballs in dust, sanding and paint 😅

This hall, stairs & landing took me 12 days from start to finish across 3 storeys, restoring and repainting all exposed woodwork throughout.

What people often don’t see with decorating is that the finish is made in the prep.

Every surface was thoroughly sanded, all knots sealed with Zinsser BIN, bare wood properly primed, gaps filled and caulked, then finished with THREE coats of durable acrylic satin for a long-lasting finish.

Safe to say my hands and wrists are absolutely broken now 😂 but seeing the transformation from tired orange pine to this clean fresh finish made it worth it.

I’ve actually completed quite a few jobs recently and realised I’ve hardly posted any of them, so I’ll try and share a few more over the next couple of weeks 👋

Spent part of the weekend building and fitting this new gate for my house, plus added a new house number sign on the front door too 👌

The gate definitely wasn’t a small job though 😅 it took me the best part of the day, but worth it once it was all up and finished.

The number on the gate is actually the old house sign. It was looking a bit rusty and tired, so I spray painted it black, redid the white number 1 and gave it a new life instead of binning it.

Bonus points that the new house sign lights up after dark too ✨

Slowly giving the house a proper glow up 😌 Very pleased with how it’s turned out.

Quick question for everyone…

This is the wallpaper that’s on the walls of a room I’m decorating. It hasn’t been covered over or updated since it was put up, this is just how the room has been decorated until now. You walk in and think you’ve been transported back in time!!

What decade would you put this in? I’m thinking early 1990’s 🤔 Oh and did anyone have this wallpaper in their house growing up?

After I’ve finished stripping it all off, the room is being painted a lovely colour called Boulder Lichen by Johnstone’s 💚

A little timelapse from a much longer job 😅
5 hours of wallpaper stripping yesterday and my arms are feeling it today!💪
Who needs the gym?
🎶 I like to move it, move it 🎶
All ready to paint a gorgeous deep red colour next week!

✨ Feature Wall Transformation ✨

Swipe through to see the before, during and finished shots of this recent wallpapering job and keep an eye out for the trunking 👀

This one had a bit of a challenge… on the TV wall there was vertical trunking running straight down the wall that rather interfered with the pattern 🙈

Rather than leaving it obvious, I carefully patterned around it so it blends in as part of the design.

It took patience (and a fair bit of lining up!) but now it disappears into the blossom branches 🌸

I’ve shared a few before, during and after photos and I think you’ll all agree that this one looks fab 😍

Feature walls are such a great way to bring personality into a room without overwhelming the space. Bold, bright, floral, graphic stripes - I love them all.

If you’ve got a wall that needs a bit of love (or a tricky bit you’re not sure how to tackle), drop me a message.

✅ Day 2 of this course done today!

Lots of learning, lots of thinking, and still spinning all the usual plates alongside work.

When your job puts you in people’s homes, these skills feel just as important as the handywoman ones.

Busy days, but important ones 💛

🧡 I’ve completed my SafeTALK training 🧡

On Friday I completed the SafeTALK course in su***de alertness.

It’s about learning how to notice the signs, start the conversation, and help someone feel heard and supported - not fixing, not judging, just being present and knowing how to respond.

I’d honestly recommend this training to everyone.
Talking saves lives, and the more confident we become having these conversations, the more we help break the stigma around mental health.

I work with people from all walks of life, and this felt like an important step for me both personally and professionally.

If this post encourages even one more open conversation, it’s worth sharing 🧡

My first ever gate - built from scratch to bespoke measurements.

This gateway needed a gate that was truly made to measure.

So I measured up, built the gate from raw timber, and fitted it to suit the opening exactly.

I also replaced and reinforced the rotten sections of the existing frame and matched everything neatly to the new gate.

See the photos to see the process and the finished result.

Safe to say… I’m very impressed with myself 😌

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be slightly less available on Mondays and also on Friday 6th Feb, and I wanted to share why.

Alongside my DIY work, I often support people who are vulnerable, overwhelmed, or going through a tough time. While I’m not a counsellor, I believe that when you’re working in someone’s home - especially one-to-one - emotional safety matters just as much as practical skill.

So this February I’m investing in training to make sure I show up responsibly, not just helpfully:

NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (6 weeks, Mondays)
safeTALK Su***de Alertness Training (half-day, 6 Feb)

This isn’t about changing what I do - it’s about doing it better.
Listening properly. Recognising when someone might need extra support.
And knowing what to do (and what not to do) if a conversation goes somewhere heavy.

It also means I won’t be taking bookings on those training days - but I’ll still be available the rest of the week, and I’ll always be upfront about timings.

For me, this work has never just been about wages.
It’s about trust, dignity, and leaving people feeling safer than I found them.

Thanks to everyone who’s been so supportive and if you’re waiting on a booking, I appreciate your patience while I do this properly.
