Looking for an inexpensive day out where children can get up close to animals?

Kingston Maurward Animal Park is just a few minutes drive from us, and there's lots to see and do.

There's a £5 parking charge and entry into the park itself is free.

Inside you can meet lots of different types of animal. There are also indoor and outdoor play area and a cafe.

This is a great time of year to enjoy watching some of Dorset's wonderful wildlife.

There are loads of nature reserves around the county, with lots focused on birds.

The place where you can get up close to one of the biggest birds - the mute swan - is Abbotsbury Swannery.

The birds are wild, and they've been gathering here for hundreds of years.

If you turn up for 12 noon or 4pm, you may get a chance to help feed them.

The Swannery is open until the end of October.

This weekend sees the climax of the Windsurfing World Championships - being held in Weymouth and Portland.

There will be a Fan Zone beside Weymouth Pavilion, with big screen coverage, music, food and competitions. There will also be 'have a go' sessions available as part of Weymouth Water Fest.

If you're a watersports fan, or just want to dip your toe in the water, this sounds like a lot of fun!

Summer 2026 was a lot of fun for so many!

Don't forget to wave to George as you go past.

He's easy to spot as you drive between Osmington and Weymouth.

George has been on the hillside since the early 1800s. It's a representation of King George III, a regular visitor to Weymouth over 200 years ago.

The king loved to ride around the local area during his holidays here.

He had a house on the seafront in Weymouth - it's now The Gloucester. We don't suppose he did self-catering!
