⚠️ New figures released by HETAS during Chimney Fire Safety Week have highlighted a worrying statistic for our local area. ⚠️
In 2025/26, the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service area recorded 89 chimney fires, making it the second highest area in the country for chimney fire callouts.
BUT Chimney fires are often preventable with the right maintenance and safe burning habits. So, what can you do to reduce the risk?
🔥 Get your chimney swept regularly.
A professional sweep removes soot, tar and other deposits that can build up and potentially ignite.
🔥 Burn the right fuel.
If you have a wood burner, make sure you're burning dry, seasoned or appropriately certified wood.
Wet wood creates more smoke and deposits inside your chimney.
🔥 Have your chimney checked.
Regular inspections can identify issues such as cracks, damaged flue liners or other problems before they become bigger concerns.
🔥 Don't overload your stove.
Follow the manufacturer's guidance and avoid burning more fuel than your appliance is designed to handle.
🔥 Never ignore warning signs.
Excessive smoke, unusual smells, a roaring sound from the chimney or flames coming from the chimney are all reasons to take action and seek professional advice.
A safe, well-maintained chimney is an important part of enjoying your stove or open fire.
If you're unsure when your chimney was last inspected or swept, now is a good time to check before the colder months arrive.
