Hardcastle Rural Surveyors have achieved planning consent for a range of rural developments for our clients over recent months and are pleased to share the following successful applications:

Conversion of stone barns to form 3x residential dwellings
Full planning application for the conversion of dis-used agricultural stone barns to form 3 large residential dwellings west of Harrogate. The scheme involved the relocation of the farming operations and redesign of the highway access.

Construction of earth bank slurry lagoon on a dairy farm near Skipton
Full planning application submitted for a new slurry lagoon to ensure the applicant had suitable slurry storage capacity to cope with their expanding business and were compliant with requirements set by DEFRA and the Environment Agency.

Er****on of straw and machinery shed on a livestock farm near Ripon
Permitted development application submitted for a new farm building for the storage of straw and machinery, allowing the applicant to improve their farm efficiencies.

Change of use to enclosed dog walking facility south of Harrogate
Change of use application for 2 no. dog walking enclosures, creating a small-scale farm diversification enterprise. The applicant identified a small area of agricultural land that was currently underutilised and suitably located for an alternative, commercial use.

SFI Issues - HRS Letter to DEFRA

This week saw the opening and sudden closure of the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 Scheme with the application process being described by many as a complete fiasco. The funding disappeared in under 6 hours leaving many farmers without access to funding.

Andrew Hardcastle of Hardcastle Rural Surveyors has written to Rt Hon Dame Angela Eagle DBE MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, setting out his concerns, the key issues with the application process and making recommendations and suggestions for future rounds of the scheme.

SFI 2026 - Scheme now closed for applications

The Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 Scheme Window 2 opened for applications at 10am today, 22nd September with a limited budget of £230m.

Demand for the scheme has been exceptionally high and the full budget has been allocated in under 6 hours leaving many farmers without the opportunity to apply for the scheme.

The team at Hardcastle Rural have put in a massive effort to submit as many applications for clients as possible within the latest window, unfortunately not all applications have been possible due to the extremely short application window.

We will continue to lobby both the government and our local MP's to address the unacceptable application process, the insufficient budget and the unfair nature of the scheme.

A further round of the SFI will be available in 2027 and we will be in touch with our client to discuss future opportunities as they arise.

What a fantastic day at Nidderdale Show!

The dale really shone, and it was a pleasure to spend such a busy but brilliant day catching up with clients, family and friends in the sunshine.

A real team effort behind the scenes, with plenty of home baking, tea, w**e and b**r to keep everyone going! 🍰☕🍷🍺

It was a privilege to see different generations of families enjoying the day — we even roped in our next generation and their friends to do a bit of the hospitality! The day really summed up what a wonderful community we are lucky to be part of.

A huge thank you to everyone who came by and helped make it such a special day — we really appreciate it. A special thank you to the Nidderdale Show Committee for all their hard work in putting together such a wonderful event.

The show tent has been packed up for this year, but we look forward to seeing you all at next year's shows!
