We have several new members at our Castle Lodge premises in Tonbridge. Vicki Thornhill has a desk one day a week. It is a great benefit to us at Deskrenter Ltd as she‘s working with our council’s economic development teams to support start up and SME businesses.

Vicki is the West Kent Business Project Coordinator, leading the UK Government–funded West Kent Business Support Programme. She helps small businesses access free advice, mentoring sessions, events and, currently, a grant scheme offering up to £500 for growth and productivity.

Alongside this coordinator role, Vicki also runs Vicki the Virtual Assistant, supporting entrepreneurs with admin, marketing and business development, often taking a “thinking partner” approach to help business owners plan and progress with confidence.

We have updated our booking system to include all the meeting rooms and pod plus each of the hot desks across all our locations.

To improve room availability by reducing empty periods, we have reduced the booking time from 1 to ½ hour slots. We have also streamlined the process to help with last minute bookings. Requests no longer require our confirmation before appearing in the room calendar as taken, removing the possibility of more than one open request for the same time slot.

With our spaces getting busier and busier, we have added desk bookings to the system. Those members using desks for a few days a week can now prebook to guarantee a desk for the day of their choice.

All the booking options can now be found under the new Members section of our website.

After last year's successful run of upgrades, I’m pleased to announce orders in and fibre installations due at Castle Lodge in Tonbridge and No.85 Mount Pleasant as we upgrade both locations to 1Gb connections.

There is another exciting upgrade completed at Castle Lodge - the new and very popular phone booth...

Following discussions with our Castle Lodge members it became clear that with the office approaching capacity there was a need for a more effective space for video calls than the existing phone booth. One with a higher level of soundproofing for better privacy for the user and reduced noise disruption for the rest of the workspace.

With a plan in place to upgrade the exiting booth rather than buy a pre-built unit we set our selves the target of achieving a better noise reduction level than the off the shelf product (25dB). Sound levels were tested before and during the alterations in order to see where we were on our target.

The booths window panels were removed and filled with sound insulation before being covered over with acoustic panelling inside and solid plywood outside. Testing proved we were however short of our target so we went on to clad the outside with acoustic panelling which we refitted twice before managing to properly eradicate the sound bleed through gaps, especially the door frame.

The resulting 40dB improvement whilst brilliant took its toll on air circulation so an extractor fan was fitted for comfort along with the addition of new lighting (having removed all the windows), plus swapping the old arm chair for a height adjusted stool and laptop table improving video calls. Having removed the ability to see in and to hear if the booth is in use the final touch was the fitting of an ‘On Air’ indicator light to the outside of the booth to save potential interruptions.

The new booth has since proved popular as in regular use and member feedback has been really positive.

NEWS!
We are restarting our in-house events and partnerships programme, and held our first free drop-in session last Wednesday.

Neil Williams, accredited Business Coach who we’ve worked with since opening in 2017, met with Andy from Aviation Events Group. Neil will be back working out of the meeting room next month if anyone would like to book in with him for a 15 minute chat free of charge, or take the full hour at his discounted members rate of £85.
If you think you’d benefit but want to know more, I’d be happy to elaborate, or you can ask Andy about his experience.

We will be running drop-in Q&As on Accountancy and Mortgages too, so please let me know if you’d like adding to the list for either of those. Dates to follow soon.

We welcome Ateff Nabhani who has taken space in Lonsdale Gardens while Keith Palmer, long term resident writer at The House and Joe Frederick 🎥 both join the movers list having relocated over to Tonbridge, where they join Dean Leak as newbies in our Castle Lodge office.

We bid a fond farewell to the team at Random Colour Animal who leave us for the bright lights of London after their acquisition by InclineBet and welcome Nordic Group who’ve taken over their space at 85 Mount Pleasant. Hoping the lure of Starbucks directly below the office doesn’t prove too much for them.

1st December was a busy day at No.76 as we welcomed two new teams to DeskRenter.
