The House that Jack and Mark built Join us on our 'seaside lodge in the woods' building adventure

It was satisfying to see this after everyone had left.... But there was still alot of work in the weeks that followed this to get up to floor level. I'll post some more updates in the coming days to show the hard work we all put in over the rest of January.

It's been such a busy January for us, and I am behind on sharing progress because of this! On 10th January we had the concrete for the foundations delivered. Due to the location of the lodge we had no viable option but to have a pump to pump the concrete to the site. The pump arrived at about 7am and what a beast of a machine it was. We have done quite alot of building work at our home over the 22 years of living here, but nothing on this scale, and so to say we were nervous about this was an understatement. However thanks to the pump, the concrete supplier and and his team it was very smooth and all done and dusted by lunchtime. We have done quite a bit more in the following 10 days so follow along to see more progress here 😊

Last Sunday 7 January 2024, & the footings were at last complete and had been inspected & approved by the council. Take a look around the hole in the ground as this is the last time you'll see it looking like this! During the last 7 days since this video was shot we have made good progress - it was a very busy (&expensive) week! I'll bring you up to date over the next few posts. Theres not alot of time for posting updates with everything that's going on for us these days but I'm going to do my best! It will be good for us to look back on too to see how far we've come when the journey gets tough which it probably will at times!

It's been a while since we last updated you all! Just because we have been quiet here doesn't mean we've been quiet on site. So through December the footings were dug, first by hand, then thankfully we managed to get a digger and with a bit of help and hard work Mark Rudge got the footings dug out. The rain in December made it very tedious, and some evenings we could literally hear the sides of the footings slipping down due to the amount of water that was falling! This meant many hours with a shovel clearing them out so ensure they were adequate for the inspection which took place on Wednesday 3rd January 2024....keep following to see what else has happened in January as I'm going to catch you up with everything over the next few days. the year that this dream is going to really start to become reality.

We are taking a few days break over half term to do some things with the boys, but thought you'd like an update on the gabion wall progress. This little video was taken a couple of days ago and in fact since then it's all been completed, the filled baskets having been topped with smaller granite chippings and the lid fitted. Job done. ✔️
This was our first time using gabion baskets. We did lots of reading, research and prep before starting. If you want any tips or pearls of wisdom from our experience drop us a line.

We were glad of the sun shining on us this weekend while we made some progress (in between football matches). We are ready for the gabion baskets now 🥳 one of our boys was a great help, hoping to encourage the teenaged ones to flex their muscles soon🤞🏼

Just wanted to do a before and 'a bit' after shot. So in the first shot taken in the early summer. The hedge is still up with the pergola to the right, but now (second shot) the hedge has gone (but it's been preserved in big buckets to be planted again 🤞) & digging for the retaining wall is well underway (3rd photo). This is back breaking hard work.... Which has been undertaken by hand (well, cornish shovel😉).

I know it's early days for the lodge build.... But I thought I'd share the 'seaside' that I'm talking about when I refer to our lodge as being by the sea. This is no more than 5 mins walk away....infact we are between two beaches. I'll show you the other, (equally beautiful) another time 😍

We haven't had chickens for several years now, so the dismantling of the chicken run was not too difficult. However this greenhouse was different. We acquired it about 12-15 years ago from a lovely elderly neighbour who had had it for 40 plus years and now just wanted it gone. It had very little glass left in it at that point and so we decided (because the wooden frame was so elderly) to give it a final lease of life by covering it in poly tunnel plastic. We have had loads of use out of this and I loved pottering in my greenhouse. We grew all sorts there over the years and it was a godsend in lock down when we were able to lavish alot of time in the garden.
Therefore it was a sad day when 2 weeks ago the greenhouse had to finally come down. It was so old there was no chance of it being resurrected elsewhere again so it has now gone.
The old had to be sacrificed for the new to come....
