Southwest Knotweed

A few jobs from the last few weeks, across the Southwest.

Japanese Knotw**d and bamboo, treatment through to full removal.

One of our CSJK accredited surveyors was in Cornwall today, carrying out a site inspection on a steep coastal bank above the beach.

This visit is part of a five year management programme, and it is worth explaining where it sits in the process, because the inspection is not where the work begins.

It starts with a full survey. We identify the species, record the extent and location of every stand, assess the risk to the property and the boundaries, and produce a written report with a management plan. Once that plan is agreed, the five year programme begins.

Treatment is applied at the right points in the growing season, and the site is inspected between those visits to check how the stands are responding, whether there is any regrowth, and whether anything has changed along the boundary or on neighbouring land. Every inspection is recorded and photographed, so the site builds a documented history from the original survey through to completion.

That record is the part people underestimate. It is what gives a homeowner, a buyer, a lender or a solicitor confidence that the knotw**d has been managed properly over time rather than sprayed once and forgotten about.

Coastal sites like this one add their own difficulties. Dense scrub and bracken hide a lot, the ground is loose underfoot, and access across the slope has to be thought through.

We are a PCA member company and our surveyors hold CSJK accreditation, so the programmes we run are audited and carried out to industry standard.

If you are dealing with Japanese knotw**d, or it has come up on a property you are buying or selling, get in touch and we will explain what a survey and management programme involves.

"As a family business, we have been working on something for the past few months - Knotw**dID, an app that identifies Japanese knotw**d from a photo. Get a free instant check, and if you need it confirmed properly there's a paid option backed by PCA-accredited surveyors. Would mean a lot if you gave it a look (or shared with anyone who's ever panicked about a weird plant in the garden!) 🌿" (Available on the Apple App Store / Google Play Store Release Expected next week!)

Japanese knotw**d growing near a river, stream, or other watercourse on your land is something that should never be ignored. This highly invasive plant spreads quickly in these environments, with fragments easily carried downstream, leading to further areas and potential impact on neighbouring land and local ecosystems. If not properly managed, it can also result in legal issues under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, particularly if it spreads beyond your boundary.

At Southwest Knotw**d, we provide professional Japanese knotw**d identification, treatment and long-term management services across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. We work closely with landowners, homeowners and businesses to ensure Japanese knotw**d is dealt with effectively and in line with current legislation.

If you suspect Japanese knotw**d on your land, especially near a watercourse, early assessment and a structured management plan can make all the difference. Feel free to get in touch with us for honest advice - we’re always happy to help and point you in the right direction.

Bamboo Removal Somerset

Our team has recently undertaken a Bamboo excavation project in Somerset.

As shown in the images, this Bamboo was well established and had spread laterally over a significant distance, with rhizomes extending throughout the lawn and encroaching into neighbouring properties.

The Bamboo had also infiltrated the adjacent stone wall, which will continue to be monitored during our scheduled inspection visits. Should any new growth be observed, it will be treated with a systemic herbicide. As the remaining rhizome is now detached from the main network, it will be susceptible to any subsequent treatments.

Upon completion of the full programme, Southwest Knotw**d will provide a 10-Year Guarantee.

Southwest Knotw**d – The Southwest’s Invasive W**d Management Company, have an exciting new update!

As a proud member of the Property Care Association, which enables us to stand on a platform and confidently say we really do know what we are talking about when it comes to invasive plants, and how to not only manage them, but to manage them to a standard where we can offer a backed guarantee of 10-years after completing a Management Programme.

Southwest Knotw**d can now offer 10-Year Insurance Backed Guarantees for the management and removal of bamboo.

Why does this matter so much?
Bamboo has had a lot of bad press recently, which has therefore led to building surveyors and some lenders flagging bamboo in certain scenarios. Our clients don’t want stress or worry; they just want a solution. That’s where we come in. Many of our clients are people who are either buying, selling, or simply want some long-term peace of mind.

How does it work?
After a Management Programme, the client will receive a further 10-Year Guarantee backed by a third-party company, whereby should any regrowth occur after the Programme, you will be completely covered for a further 10 Years.

Recently, Southwest Knotw**d undertook the excavation of a substantial bamboo area in Plymouth, which had rendered part of a local school’s grounds unusable. The bamboo had spread extensively, even encroaching onto the neighbouring playing field. The Bamboo, although hard to spot in the images, ran almost the entire length of the area seen in the images.

Despite a few damp days for our operatives, the initial excavation proved successful. With regular annual monitoring, the school will soon be able to reclaim the space as an area for the children to enjoy once more.

What was required to complete the excavation?
- 8-tonne excavator
- Micro excavator
- Micro dumper
- Five fully qualified operatives
