Recently, Southwest Knotw**d undertook the excavation of a substantial bamboo area in Plymouth, which had rendered part of a local school’s grounds unusable. The bamboo had spread extensively, even encroaching onto the neighbouring playing field. The Bamboo, although hard to spot in the images, ran almost the entire length of the area seen in the images.

Despite a few damp days for our operatives, the initial excavation proved successful. With regular annual monitoring, the school will soon be able to reclaim the space as an area for the children to enjoy once more.

What was required to complete the excavation?
- 8-tonne excavator
- Micro excavator
- Micro dumper
- Five fully qualified operatives

Choosing the right company for such work is essential to ensure the highest standards are met. Our years of experience, specialist training, and love for what we do allow us to finish each project with pride and confidence in the results.

Bamboo Removal in Exeter

Our team recently carried out the removal of a mature clump of Sasa Palmata from a courtyard garden in Bristol. This genus of bamboo is well known for its aggressive, running growth habit - and in this instance, it had done more than just run. The bamboo had reached the solid brick-faced foundation of the property, located a point of entry, and begun to grow within the inside of our clients property - Growth was observed between the skirting boards and flooring.

Due to the restricted access of the site, the excavation had to be completed entirely by hand. Three operatives carried out the work over the course of one day, successfully completing the initial phase of the project.

The next stage involves ongoing monitoring of the treated area. If any signs of regrowth are observed, chemical treatments will be applied as part of the scheduled programme. Once the site has shown two consecutive years with no bamboo growth, we will issue a 5-Year Guarantee.

If you are experiencing issues with bamboo on your property, please contact Southwest Knotw**d. Our team will be happy to provide advice and most importantly a solution.

Southwest Knotw**d has recently completed a bamboo excavation project in Ashburton, Devon.

Our team worked diligently to remove the bamboo, and as you can see from the images, the before and after is almost unrecognisable.

Future inspection visits will be made to areas of exploitation, where rhizomes from the bamboo have exploited areas of a stone retaining wall. This will be tackled with the careful application of a systemic herbicide over the duration of a Management Programme, followed by a 5-Year Guarantee.

Southwest Knotw**d has successfully completed a significant commercial excavation project for Japanese knotw**d in Cornwall, for one of our commercial clients.

Within the span of just one week, our professional team efficiently excavated 720 tonnes of Japanese knotw**d-contaminated soil, utilising a 20-tonne excavator.

All contaminated soil has been safely transported off-site to a licensed landfill, with the closest one being in Oxford.

Our client will now be in a position to proceed with their commercial development plans.

Another successful excavation completed by the Southwest Knotw**d team!

We were recently called to a property in Cornwall where bamboo had grown out of control – spreading aggressively into multiple areas of the garden.

As you can see from the photos, bamboo can become highly invasive if not properly contained, sending runners underground and emerging metres away from its original location.

Our specialist team carried out a full mechanical excavation, carefully tracking and removing the extensive rhizome network to prevent future regrowth. With the roots thoroughly excavated and the site professionally cleared, we’ve returned this space to a blank canvas – ready for replanting or landscaping.

Whether it’s bamboo, Japanese knotw**d, or other invasive species, Southwest Knotw**d offers effective, no-nonsense solutions across the South West.

We know what you’re thinking: “is that Bamboo!?”

It is!

The excavation of Sasa Palmata Bamboo from a property in Cornwall. The previous owner had a passion for Bamboo, planting it in several areas around the garden. Over the course of 20 to 30 years, the Bamboo flourished and spread extensively.

The image below illustrates the extent of rhizome that was present.
