The Tamar Protection Society is a charity who maintains two heritage properties. This is a "time capsule" grocers which traded during the 20th century.

Our environmental and conservation organisation maintain and manage two historic properties in Saltash, Cornwall.

1] Mary Newman`s Cottage in Culver Road, which is a Grade 2 listed property, parts of which date to around 1480. It is reputed to once have been the home of Mary Newman, the first wife of Sir Francis Drake. It is now authentically furnished in a Tudor Fashion and includes a well maintained garden.
2] Elliott's Shop and Museum in Lower Fore Street. The shop depicts the shopping experience encountered up until the 1970s as well as exhibitions illustrating the life and times of the Elliott family. Our season runs annually from April until the end of September. During the closed season group visits may be organised. Phone 01579384381 or e mail [email protected]

Normal opening hours are
Mary Newman's Cottage: Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm. Elliott's Shop: Wednesday and Thursday from 2:00pm until 4:00pm and Saturday from 10:00am until noon. For more information telephone 01579384381 or e mail [email protected]

The last U3A ukelele performance for this season will take place at Mary Newman's Cottage on Saturday 12th September. The cottage will be open from 12.00 noon wirh the first song being performed at 2.00 pm.

On Saturday 12th September, Saltash U3A Ukelele band will make their last appearance for this season, at Mary Newman's Cottage. They will be playing from 2.00pm until 3.30pm.

This Saturday ( 1st August ) the U3A Ukelele Band will be entertaining visitors at Mary Newman's Cottage. Light refreshments will be on offer, and songsheets will be provided for those that wish to join in. Please note we can except CASH ONLY.

In July the Saltash U3A ukelele group entertained visitors at Mary Newman's Cottage. The Tamar Protection Society are pleased to announce that the group will be returning on Saturday 1st August, from 2:00pm until 3:30pm.

What could be better than enjoying a slice of lemon drizzle cake and a drink at Mary Newman's Cottage? Well, this Saturday [6th June] you could also be entertained by the Saltash U3A Ukelele Group from 2.00pm until 3.00pm! The cottage will be open as usual from 12.00 noon until 4.00 pm, so why not make an afternoon of it, by looking around the cottage and garden as well as enjoying the music.

Mary Newman's Cottage is a wonderful venue to enjoy music. On Saturday 6th June the garden will host the Saltash U3A Ukelele group for a concert. They will perform from 2.00pm until 3.00pm. The cottage and garden will be open as usual from 12.00 noon until 4.00pm, so not only can you be enchanted by the garden and Tudor cottage, but you can enjoy cake and a drink whilst being entertained. FREE ENTRY but please note we can accept CASH PAYMENTS only.

On Saturday 2nd May both Elliott's Store [from 10.00 am until 2.00pm] and Mary Newman's Cottage [from 12.00 noon until 4.00pm] will be open in support of the Saltash May Fair.
Why not come and brush up on your pre-decimal currency, when maths was a little more tricky! Or perhaps you might prefer to find out the fascinating story behind the handle of a knife, dug up in Mary Newman's garden!

Thank you to all the visitors we have welcomed to Elliott's Store and Museum since we opened, just over a week ago. One visitor couldn't believe the many items that the Elliott family kept, including old tax discs.
