What do you do when you inherit a 17th-century castle, a 55-acre estate… and a £5 million tax bill?

19 years ago today, Ted inherited Pentillie after 27 years of being kept away from the Castle.

Together with his wife Sarah and their three children, Oli, Sammie and Roonie, they had a huge decision to make: sell Pentillie, or find a way to give it a future.

Thankfully, they chose the latter and decided to share the beauty of Castle and gardens, opening for events, milestones celebrations, private hire and dreamy weddings.

With plenty of hard work and a few twists and turns later, Pentillie continues to be the setting for countless celebrations, welcoming people from near and far through its doors.

There’s a lot of history within these walls and the story is still being written.

Pack a picnic, grab your favourite people and head to Pentillie for Illyria's outdoor theatre, The Pirates of Penzance.

Arrive from 5:30pm, wander through the gardens, grab a drink from our bar, enjoy plenty of laughs and live theatre as the sun goes down.

We’re opening the Castle doors for our annual Charity Coffee Morning on Wednesday 30 September, raising money for Mustard Tree Cancer Support Centre Cancer Support Centre at Derriford Hospital.

The Mustard Tree offers free support to people affected by cancer, from patients to family members and carers ~ providing information, advice and someone to talk to when they need it.

So bring a friend, settle in with a coffee and a slice of cake (or two), have a wander through the gardens and enjoy a morning together at Pentillie.

Earlier this year, you helped us raise an incredible £20,083.64 for charity through our spring Garden Open Days, so we’d love to see you there to help us do a little more good.💛

But after months (sometimes years) of planning, you shouldn't have to spend your wedding day managing it.

Our wedding manager is there to keep an eye on timings, liaise with your chosen suppliers and quietly sort the little things that may crop up, leaving you to concentrate on the important things...

What would you do with your own castle for the weekend?

It starts with everyone arriving, settling in and making the most of the afternoon together. Someone heads for the games room, someone pours a drink, and before you know it, you’re all sitting around one table for dinner.

You’ll probably stay up later than planned, catching up with loved ones and eventually, one by one, everyone disappears upstairs to their own exceptionally comfortable bed.

The next morning, there’s nowhere you need to be. Take your time. Swim in the pool, unwind in the sauna, brave a dip in the Tamar or wander the 55 acres at your own pace. Settle down for a long lunch on the terrace, or head out to explore a little further afield.

Then back to the Castle, where dinner becomes another round of stories, laughter and reminiscing about the memories you’ve just made together.

And when morning comes, there’s still no need to rush. Enjoy one last slow breakfast before heading home — or stay another night. There’s really no reason not to.

11 bedrooms. 55 acres. The River Tamar. And, for the weekend, it’s all yours.

Our final outdoor theatre of the summer is coming up on Thursday 10 September, as Illyria Outdoor Theatre return with The Pirates of Penzance to the gardens at Pentillie.

The perfect excuse to enjoy an evening of live theatre, great company and a little theatrical mischief.

A front-row seat to the universe, from Pentillie's Stone Circle✨

During the solar eclipse, Graham, one of our estate tenants, pointed his telescope skywards to capture the moon crossing the sun above Pentillie.

A little eclipse magic with Sammie ✨

No fancy equipment needed, just 2 pieces of paper, a pin and somewhere sunny to stand — a simple way to bring the spectacle a little closer.

Where will you be watching from this evening? And don’t forget to look up again once the sun goes down for the Perseid meteor shower!
