⚠️ This bird protection is more dangerous than having no bird protection at all.

It could even leave owners on the wrong side of the law.

This is something I’m seeing more and more:

* Homemade mesh solutions
* Cheap materials
* Poorly installed bird protection
* Gaps, sharp edges, or loose fixings

Installed with good intentions…
But creating serious problems later.

Birds become
Trapped,
Injured,
Nest behind badly fitted protection

And once nesting starts, things become much more complicated.

In the UK, birds and active nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

That means:

* Active nests cannot legally be disturbed or destroyed
* Harm to protected birds can carry legal consequences
* Delays in dealing with the issue can increase risks to both the birds and the solar system

So poor bird protection doesn’t just fail…

Bird protection should protect BOTH the solar system AND the wildlife around it.

Seagulls, windscreen wipers, and chicken bones?

Welcome to rooftop solar.

Seagulls are surprisingly resourceful birds.

When nesting around solar arrays,
They carry food and debris onto the roof

Dropping items onto the panels
While feeding or defending territory.

On commercial systems we’ve come across some strange finds
Chicken bones,
Stones,
Shells,
Even windscreen wipers

While it can raise a smile, the consequences can be serious.

Solar panels are strong.........but
Heavy or sharp objects falling onto the glass
Cause cracks or microfractures.

These aren’t always obvious from the ground,
They can lead to:
• Reduced energy production
• Water ingress into the panel
• Electrical faults or hotspots
• Long-term fire risk if damage goes unnoticed

Once a panel is cracked,
It’s no longer fully protected from the elements,
Performance quietly declines.

We "Cracked It"...........One Cracked Panel = £Thousands at Risk

While carrying out routine cleaning
Nothing dramatic.
No alarms.
No system shutdown.
No urgent contractor call-out.

On inspection, the issue was simple
Only up close & on the roof...... we found it.
One cracked panel within a larger array.
From the ground, it was never spotted.

What made it significant wasn’t the crack itself.
But it had created a hotspot
A localised area of overheating inside the panel
Affecting the performance of the entire string.

The system was still operating.
But it wasn’t operating efficiently.
