This paddock had not been touched for some time. With some of the grasses and weeds standing over 5 feet tall. The thick grass had fallen over after going to seed with more fresh new grass growing through. A thick bed to mulch along with several years growth from brambles and hard stems over 1 inch in diameter. The hedges were all cut and mulched with the mowers. A good days work for the two of us and a hot one at that. Clearing the overgrowth one never knows what may lay beneath. Along with the vintage Chevrolet & Morris 16 out in the undergrowth an Albion roller mill & Bamford Chaff Cutter .Vintage finds Overgrown cut

The ground is still very soft and wet for mowing & almost a no go for digging.
Spring however has definitely sprung. Lets hope we have some dryer weather.
We are fast approaching the main planting and sowing season and coming back into the pruning season. March is the last of the quiet months.

A 23ft height reduction from 13ft +- down to 09ft with the waste chipped on site.

2 Seater Wooden Garden Bench
The Harvington 4ft Garden Bench from Forest arrived in secure banded packaging.
It comes with a 15 year anti fungus and rot guarantee.
Though there are no instructions the Bench is very simple to build.
there are a few good size cracks in the timber but nothing that wont occur over time. The timber itself i have sanded due to several rough areas especially on the arm rests. The 4 50mm supplied star drive screws i changed to my own stock of 60mm as the supplied ones are to short.
The dowels are very tight so a good hammer was needed to close the joints.
The barrel nuts were also a very tight fit and need care as they are a nightmare to retract if you push them too deep as the countersunk holes are deeper than required.
In all very easy fit and looks like a nice chunky sturdy bench.
I will be treating it with additional preserve as i have yet to find any good pressure treated timber.

Conifer Hedge trim and height reduction part2
The hedge is about on its final leg as its now 6 to 7 feet wide in places.
As with any Conifer they only grow from the tip so heavy pruning is never an option. They get to a point where removal is required. conifer is always a poor choice of hedging in any garden.
Talking with the customer to give them some ideas on a more suitable hedge. Most conifer is not suitable for a garden but Thuja is ideal. it gives privacy but can take a heavy trim without all the dead. Other options are privet

Crown reduction for safety
a lovely sunny day reducing the high and more importantly the overhand over the next door neighbours conservatory.
Chipped to site & customer kept the logs to burn next season.
Returning in the summer to give the tree a proper prune and further reduction. This time of year isn't an ideal time to prune any "Prunus", stone fruit due to fungal issues and especially silverleaf hence not taking to much off at this time. mid summer is the best time.

Storm damage or was it !
Although the Silver Birch, (Betula pendula) came down in the storm it was only a matter of time.
The tree luckily landed in the top of an adjacent tree missing the van parked underneath
The issue here was ivy and the hedge
The ivy has grown around the base of the Birch tree and along with it being in the hedge old leaves have kept the trunk wet. Rotting the bark and weakening the tree by damaging inner layer called sapwood (xylem), which moves water and nutrients up the trunk. Its also rotted the inner layers called heartwood.
Its time was very limited.
