October is a lovely month to visit the North Yorkshire coast 🍂🌊

Cattersty Sands beach, less than a 5-minute easy stroll from the cottage, is always quiet and peaceful.

Nearby, places like Whitby, Staithes and Saltburn-by-the-Sea are quieter once the summer holidays are over, so you can wander around and take your time. It’s easier to choose where you actually fancy stopping for something to eat or drink, rather than just looking for somewhere with a table free, and to get those lovely photos without quite so many people in the background.

A little about the cottage… 🏡
📍 Set in Skinningrove, just a 10-minute drive from Staithes and Saltburn-by-the-Sea, less than half an hour from Whitby, and surrounded by the beautiful North York Moors.

🛏️ Sleeps 4, with a king-size bedroom and a superking bedroom that can also be made up as twins.
🐾 Dogs stay free and paws are welcome upstairs too — we really are dog friendly.
🛋️ Two separate lounges.
🛁 Upstairs bathroom with roll-top bath, plus a separate downstairs shower room.

A little tour of Goathland Station yesterday 🚂

We had a look around the very pretty station and ended up meeting a couple of stars at the Goathland Hotel too.

Tricia Penrose, better known as Gina from Heartbeat, is now part-owner of the hotel — the very pub used as the Aidensfield Arms in the series, where Gina worked behind the bar. Apparently she’s there fairly often too.

We also happened to sit next to the lovely Stevie D (Stephen Dowd) and his friend and got chatting.

Stevie is a local singer and entertainer who’s raised thousands of pounds for local charities, and between them they had some great stories to tell. We’ve also come away with a few new places to go and explore.

Stevie and Tricia got chatting too, and he’s now planning on serenading her next time she comes to Goathland 😆

A terrific afternoon all round.

I don’t mind doing the laundry one bit when I can sit and relax with a drink while I wait. 🧺🫧☕️

We don’t have a washing machine at Stone Row Cottage, so whenever we’re here we always pop to Odd Socks Cafe Launderette in Guisborough. It’s dog friendly too. 🐾

Guisborough is a lovely old market town for a wander, with the ruins of Gisborough Priory just opposite Odd Socks. And with a large M&S Foodhall, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Lidl, you can get the weekly shop done at the same time too.

✂️Autumn taming at Stone Row 🌿🌸

The clematis has had one of its twice-yearly brutal cuts again. Every time we cut it back we look at it and think, have we gone too far this time? 😆 If you’ve visited recently, you might even have had to fight it to get out of the gate.

Give it a few months though and it’ll be taking over again, and come April/May it rewards us with the most beautiful mass of flowers 🌸

The lavender has only been in a couple of years, but there’s obviously something good in the Yorkshire air — or the soil 😆 — because that too was huge when we arrived this week. That’s had a good cut back as well, ready to look lovely again next summer. 💜
