We are excited to share with you a project we have been busy working on - The Peaty Dales Way leaflet.

Did you know a large part of the Dales Way passes through peatlands? This leaflet showcases just that, and why this habitat is so special.

If you’re planning to walk the Dales Way or are curious about just how peaty the Yorkshire Dales National Park is, take a look at our leaflet. You can do so by:

• Downloading it for free from Yorkshire Peat Partnership's website: www.yppartnership.org.uk/Peaty-dales-way

• Picking one up in the information centres in the Dales.

The leaflet was illustrated by Charlotte Wilkinson and was created in collaboration with Yorkshire Dales National Park, Yorkshire National Trust, Nethergill Farm, and the Dales Way Association. The project was funded through the Yorkshire Dales National Park Farming in Protected Landscapes programme.

Happy Earth Day 🌍

Nethergill Farm is home to far more than just the Thomas family. Life unfolds quietly but dramatically here. From the flashes of red squirrels high up in the trees, to the haunting call of curlew echoing along the valley. Along the riverbanks, oystercatchers patrol the water’s edge while illusive otters frolic in the beck. Rare and remarkable black grouse continue their fragile existence on the higher land while hares and stoats battle in the hay meadows.

The native broadleaf woodlands and peatland are slowly regenerating; living systems supporting an extraordinary diversity of life, including extremely rare mosses.

The farm is a shared space. Owls and bats rise at dusk. Deer move freely along the fence line. Weary walkers stop to rest their feet and grab a brew in the nature barn.

Thank you for being part of this special spot on Earth, for treating Nethergill with care when you visit, and for supporting nature to not just exist alongside us, but to thrive here in the 💚 of the

What a great day! I've been meaning to visit Neil Heseltine and Hill Top Farm, Bunkbarn and Cottage for the longest time, and today I finally made it over to their fascinating farm at Malham thanks to the Pasture for Life FiPL mentoring scheme.

I got to spend the day learning about their Belted Galloways, nature recovery, and so much more from the other knowledgeable attendees, including a passionate discussion about the colour of kitchen cupboards.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park never disappoint as a backdrop to a day's earning either. Inspired, grateful, and full of ideas about our next steps for nature friendly farming at Nethergill Farm

Great to spend time yesterday with the team from the Fell Pony Heritage Trust watching a wonderful demonstration of traditional horse logging by Andrew Letten and his Fell and Dales ponies.

It was inspiring to see how skilfully the ponies extract timber with minimal impact on the woodland floor, working slowly and carefully through the coppice while protecting the health of the trees. A brilliant reminder that some of the most sustainable land management techniques are also the oldest.

Very grateful as well to Sam and Claire from The Farming Beaumonts for the generous tour of Gowbarrow Hall Farm and the chance to see the fantastic work they’re doing there.

This kind of low-impact woodland work has real relevance for places like Nethergill as we continue thinking about how traditional skills can sit alongside modern nature recovery and production.

When the nights draw in, the sky above Nethergill truly comes alive. Far from any lights, our farm sits at the heart of the Dark Sky Reserve — one of the best stargazing spots in the UK. Wrap up warm and from straight outside the door of our cosy haylofts you’ll see thousands of stars, the Milky Way, and, if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights. We also have binoculars and telescopes you can borrow.

We’re proud to be an official Dark Sky Friendly Business, helping protect these skies for future generations.

So come and stay this winter, switch off, look up, and rediscover the wonder of the night.
