🏗️ From Raw Steel to C4-Rated Fire Protection: The Canary Wharf Spa Project.
When a late-stage design change requires high-performance fire protection in a highly corrosive environment, you don't compromise—you adapt.

We recently completed a challenging steel protection project at the Canary Wharf spa pool.

Working around pre-installed pool pipework in a high-humidity C4 environment meant spraying wasn't an option. To protect the surrounding infrastructure from the solvent-based makeup of the coatings, our team stepped up to hand-apply the entire multi-stage system.

Here is exactly how we took this project from raw galvanised steel to fully certified fire compliance:🎥

Step 1: The Starting Point (Original Galvanised Steel) We started with raw, untreated galvanised steel beams. Galvanised surfaces are notoriously difficult for standard paints to adhere to, requiring a specialized chemical prep sequence to ensure a lifelong bond.

🎥 Step 2: Chemical Etching (Mordant Wash/ T-Wash) Before any paint can touch the metal, we applied a Mordant Wash (T-Wash).
This crucial chemical treatment etches the zinc surface, turning it black and creating a mechanical "key." This process ensures the primer sticks securely without the risk of future peeling or delamination.

🎥 Step 3: The Primer Shield (Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy K267)Next came the foundation layer: Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy K267 (formerly Epigrip K267 / Transgard TG121).
This heavy-duty epoxy primer provides a durable, corrosion-resistant barrier designed specifically to bond effectively with difficult zinc surfaces.

🎥 Step 4: The Fire Barrier (FIRETEX FX1003 Intumescent Coat)The final stage was the application of the Sherwin-Williams FIRETEX FX1003 solvent-based intumescent coating. Because the decision to protect the steel came late in the build timeline, our team meticulously hand-painted every inch around the intricate pool pipework to avoid overspray damage.

It wasn’t the easiest day on site for us or our clients, but the final result speaks for itself: fully compliant, C4-protected, fire-rated structural steel delivered to the highest standards. 🤝
