Calling all Creatives!
We're inviting proposals for a new project to creatively respond to the history of Shoeburyness near Southend, hosted by the Cart & Wagon Shed. For over a century the ‘Proof and Experimental Establishment’ was a military site for testing ordnance, artillery and ammunition. We are seeking a project that can reflect on and echo the language of military, war and defence, focussing on community, heritage and care.

We do come across some great artefacts that will help us to tell the story of life on the garrison.

Our latest acquisition is an absolute gem.

It has been recovered for some light restoration before being put on display.

For those of you familiar with the Army phrase ‘one flipping sausage’ this will resonate loud and clear.

Our most grateful thanks to Sarah and Dave for donating it.

And to the members of Shoeburyness and South Essex Branch, Royal Artillery Association, who managed to manhandle it onto a trailer, despite weighing 300kg.

Fabulous news for our lovely town of Shoeburyness. We are very much looking forward to working with The National Lottery Heritage Fund over the next 3 years to bring our proposals to fruition.

A great new addition to the private collection of one of our directors.

The Harcourt Badge, named after Lt.Col. Edward Vernon Harcourt, was a prize awarded at the National Artillery Association gunnery competitions held on The Old Ranges at Shoeburyness over 130 years ago.

Harcourt had commanded the 1st Brigade of the Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteers, who had won the top honour of The Queens Prize at the NAA competitions at Shoeburyness in 1866.

The badge features the prominent peacock of the Harcourt family crest which can trace its origins back to Norman nobility.

A great piece of local history.
