Always support local businesses where you can 💛

🥔 SUPPORTING LOCAL. ALWAYS. 🥔

Somehow — and we’re still not sure how — jacket potatoes have become the hottest talking point in Portsmouth 😂

With a shiny new jacket potato business opening in town, we thought it was a good moment to give a little love to one of Portsmouth’s true originals: Jacket Potato Ladies.

Vicky and her spud trailer have been part of Commercial Road for over 35 years. That’s decades of hard work, consistency, and being part of the fabric of the city — serving generations of locals through all weathers and all changes.

At the village, we believe in celebrating local stories like this. So using one of our existing village vans, we’ve created a mini Jacket Potato Ladies van to take pride of place — not an exact replica, but a small gesture of support and recognition for a business that means a lot to Portsmouth.

This isn’t about drama.
It’s about celebrating the businesses that were here before hashtags, before followers, and before jacket potatoes had opinions.

Big names may come and go.
Local favourites become part of the furniture.

So if you’re in town, grab a spud from the real deal.
And if you’re in the village, keep an eye out for the tiny version — proof that even the smallest vans can carry a big reputation.

Portsmouth knows a good spud when it sees one. 🥔😉

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM STAGGERINGLY GOOD BREWERY

Dear friends, customers and community,

We want to share with you something deeply serious that is happening to us and to the independent hospitality sector right across the UK.

Earlier last year our business rates bill skyrocketed from £870 per month in February 2025 to an insane £2,553.78 per month for the same site, an increase of nearly 200% with no corresponding increase in support or income. And now, thanks to a fresh business rates revaluation due to take effect in April 2026, we are facing yet another significant increase.

These aren’t isolated figures, this is happening to small pubs, breweries, cafés, bars, hotels and venues all over the country. Recent national news coverage shows hospitality leaders calling the situation “death by a thousand cuts” and warning of crisis-level closures.

We know many of our customers love what we do. Not just the beer, but our space and the atmosphere we’ve built here. But this isn’t just about one business. This is about sustaining local jobs, keeping the heart in our high streets, and preserving places where friends and neighbours meet to discuss the things that are important to them. You know like, how their representatives seem to only be serving themselves and not their communities or independent entities.

We employ 25 people right here in the community but when fixed costs like business rates rise so disproportionately without proportionate relief it puts immense pressure on operating viability.

We are not alone in saying this. National hospitality bodies have repeatedly urged the Government to rethink these changes and extend meaningful support across the sector.

We are fighting this every step of the way, writing to our MP and to government, and raising our voice alongside other independent venues. But we also want you, our loyal customers, to understand why we need your support now more than ever.

When you visit us, when you bring your friends, when you choose local over corporate chains you’re helping keep this space and your city alive. And we truly appreciate every one of you for that.

We love what we do. We love serving you. We love bringing new experiences. Not just the beers but everything we do as a live music venue and supporter of the arts and local traders. And we are determined to keep the brewery thriving but we’ll need all of you with us as these challenges continue.

Thank you for being part of our story. Please share this post and raise awareness for us and all the local businesses you love.

With gratitude,
Staggeringly Good Ltd

Let’s welcome in the new year together and celebrate 100 years of being a city 🏙️

Portsmouth100 – let the celebrations begin!

This New Year's Day! Free celebrations kick off with big screen fun on castle field

Portsmouth is marking its 100th year as a city in 2026! To mark this centenary, Portsmouth City Council has curated a year-long programme of cultural events, exhibitions, music, and art, delivered in partnership with organisations across the city.
The celebrations will begin on 1 January 2026 with an intimate open-air event at Castle Field, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. The family-friendly event will last 1 hour, and feature vibrant drumming, a unique artwork reveal, and a short 5-minute firework display to kick off Portsmouth100.

While the event is free and open to the public, space is limited, so visitors are encouraged to arrive early. For those unable to attend, the Portsmouth100 film will be shown at locations across the city throughout the year, ensuring everyone can share in the experience.

Programme Highlights:

5.45–6.00pm: Batala drummers on Castle Field.
6.00–6.15pm: Premiere of the Portsmouth100 film, commissioned by Portsmouth City Council and produced by Global Fire Creative, celebrating the city’s history, culture, and communities.
6.15pm: Unveiling of a stunning new artwork by Turner Prize-nominated artist Nathan Coley. His piece, OUTWITHSIDEWAYSOMEWHEREWITH, will illuminate the seafront and bring the historic lighthouse back to life, thanks to funding from Arts Council England.
6.20–6.25pm: Fireworks finale.
6.30pm: Event finishes.
