Boscobel House and its famous Royal Oak tree are home to one of the most dramatic adventure stories in English history. Converted into a timber-framed hunting lodge in the 1620s by the Roman Catholic Giffard family, it was probably intended to be a hiding place for persecuted Catholics. The house provided refuge for the young Charles II forces to flee for his life after defeating at the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
