On the South West coast lies the tiny village of Burton Bradstock who's residents lives would change forever in the early months of 1944 with the secret plans for "Overlord" "Bloody Omaha" looming and the arrival of the US 1st Infantry Division - the Big Red One.

There was a joke that was common at the time that Dorset should have tipped into the sea with the weight of so much armament.

Burton Bradstock was used by British Commandos in 1942 for operation "Yukon" then the 2nd Rangers trained on the Bridport Sand cliffs here as they were incredibly simular to the Point, one Ranger lost his life while training.

The old veterans would still recognise the village to this day as rural Dorset hasn’t changed. Memories of the Americans stay here are still alive and well. D-Day 77. These guys would have embarked at Portland, Dorset - destination - Omaha.

‘In the dappled shade of the sycamore tree on the village green at Burton Bradstock, American troops billeted in and around the village examine a machine gun belt which, according to the original caption, was found on the beach by some of the local children.

The GIs in this photograph are: Pfc John J Lawson (of 144 Pike Street, Port Jervis, New York), Pfc Robert S Hastings (of 622 Orange Avenue, Azusa, California), T/5 Leo H Pearson (of 105 Buffalo Street, Springville, New York) and Corporal Roland Henry (of 'Walthernmont, Holland, Pennsylvania). Some of the local boys can be seen chatting to the soldiers’’. ~ Burton Bradstock History
