🌍 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲

Our team has been busy giving local wildlife a helping hand! Alongside installing bird boxes and hedgehog houses, we’ve now hand-built and placed insect hotels across the green spaces of one of our Swansea sites.

These small eco-homes might be tiny, but their impact is huge, boosting biodiversity and supporting a healthier, more balanced ecosystem right on our doorstep.

We loved celebrating the second night of the Manic Street Preachers gig at Swansea Building Society Arena with our staff, partners and friends at the FSG VIP Lounge.

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟲: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸

Liam Lewis, 31 years old, Qualified Electrician, apprenticeship served at FSG

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗮𝗺’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:
“I’ve been in full time employment with FSG for over 8 years now, having first started as an Electrical Maintenance Technician apprentice.

“To rewind it back slightly to my school days, I had no idea that I would go down this path – I actually wanted to be a professional footballer for a while, but I didn’t quite make the cut!

“I went to college but flitted around a few courses before settling on Geology and earning an A Level in that. I found it interesting, but there just weren’t any opportunities to progress in that field at that time.

“My Dad had completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic when he was younger, so he was the person who encouraged me to look into an apprenticeship instead of a more traditional academic route.

“When I was 18, I started my apprenticeship at FSG, and I haven’t looked back since! I absolutely loved it, so much so that I’ve stayed with the company after qualifying back in 2017. I did take some time off to go travelling around New Zealand, but I came right back and picked up where I left off!

“I love that with FSG, I’m still learning and growing as newer, greener technologies emerge. FSG is very passionate about adapting to greener methods, so to be on the front line as we’re learning about this tech is incredibly interesting.

“I also travel a lot with FSG, and while it’s not quite as far as New Zealand, it keeps things interesting and allows me to work on a variety of exciting projects. Even though I am qualified, you never stop learning, and there are so many training opportunities available through FSG which means that you can continuously evolve.

“It’s now a full circle moment for me as I look back on my time at FSG, I was once an apprentice and am now a proud mentor to the next generation.

“To anyone considering an apprenticeship, do it! It was honestly the best decision I’ve ever made.”

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟱: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸

Jack Soproniuk, 25 years old, Plumbing & Heating apprentice

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:
“I’m Jack, I’m 25 years old, and I’ve been with FSG for three years now!

“I’m a qualified plumber, having attained my Level 3 Plumbing & Domestic Heating qualification with FSG, and I’m very proud to now be in full-time employment at the business.

“I suppose I always knew from a young age that I was going to go into a trade of some sort. When I was little, I’d always be building things with my hands – especially small birdboxes that I’d build with my grandfather. I always thought I’d go into carpentry initially, so I took a construction course in school which was mainly woodwork focused, but I really struggled to find a carpentry apprenticeship.

“During this time, my Mum was working at Swansea Council and she managed to find me some work experience in plumbing, which ultimately led me down this path. I found that I enjoyed plumbing and picked things up quickly, so I started to focus my attention there.

“After I finished school, I went to Gower College Swansea (Tycoch Campus) on a plumbing course and just built my experience and knowledge from there. I found a plumbing apprenticeship while studying, which helped me to get my foot in the door and further develop my skills.

“It was by chance that I came across an opportunity at FSG. I had finished college and was working in a pub with my mate when he left to do an apprenticeship at FSG. He then told me that they had a plumbing vacancy, so I jumped at the chance and took it, completing my Level 3 qualification in the process.

“It’s been a fantastic experience so far, and I love that every day is completely different from the last. There’s a lot of travel involved which I enjoy, and I get to work on some great buildings – my favourites so far have been the Swansea Building Society Arena and Parc y Scarlets. It’s also really exciting to learn about new technology, especially green technology, which is hugely important to us at FSG. I’ve recently undertaken a Heat Pump course to stay ahead of the curve, because that’s definitely the future for plumbing and gas.

“To anyone who’s thinking about doing an apprenticeship, I’d say to just go for it! It’s a good opportunity to learn skills, find out what you enjoy, and get paid for it. Jump for it, you won’t regret it!”

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟰: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸
Jack Smith, 25 years old, Electric Apprentice

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:
“I had no intention of becoming a tradesman, I was going to go to the Army but I ultimately changed my mind and started my journey as an apprentice.

“I started my apprenticeship when I was 20. I went to Bishopston School but now live close to the office in Fforestfach.

“After school I went to GCS in Gorseinon and studied creative media as well as a public services course but they didn’t feel quite right, which is why I’m so happy to now be doing something I love.

“There’s so much pressure to know what you want to do at 16, that actually, it’s ok if you change your mind. That’s what life is about and I’ve not looked back.

“I never thought I’d end up working in a trade, but I did look up to my uncle who was an electrician, and I could see how much he enjoyed his job and how great the career prospects are.

“I’ll qualify in the next couple of months and I’m looking forward to starting my full-time, permanent role with FSG.

“What I love about my job is the complete variety, from the type of work to the client buildings I support. There’s always a new location, a new challenge and I love it. It helps that we all get along so well, I enjoy going to work every morning and that’s all you can ask for.

“I work from Haverfordwest to Bath, Cheltenham, Brecon, Yeoville and Northampton. Our clients are varied and it keeps the job fresh.

“FSG focuses on next generation technology and a favourite system of mine to install is Loxone. It’s a fixed wired smart home system which uses sensors to manage lighting, water temperature sensors, automatic doors sensors, air temperature sensors and so much more. I also love installing EV charging points in the car parks of several client premises. Our contracts with Public Health Wales, Fire and Rescue Services and many others feels like we’re playing our part in really important services across the region which I’m unbelievably proud of.”

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟯: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸

David Reed, 28 years old, Multiskilled Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:
“I decided to switch from my job as a chef to a multiskilled carpentry role a few years back. So a complete change in career but I haven’t looked back.

“I’m from Cheltenham originally where I worked as a chef for a gastropub, before moving to Swansea where I worked at The Village Inn in Mumbles. I dipped my toe in carpentry with another business before FSG.

“When I joined FSG I initially supported the team with reactive work and a year in, I decided to make it official and begin my carpentry apprenticeship. I’m three years into my four-year training, studying with Gower College Swansea.

“While I’m completing a carpentry apprenticeship, I’m also classed as ‘multiskilled’ and even help with brick laying and other works. We have lots of great contracts at FSG, so no two days are the same.

“Our contract with Carmarthenshire County Council supporting their schools right through to carrying out work for property management businesses like RJ Chartered Surveyors, who look after buildings like Langland Bay Manor; means that the job is unbelievably varied.

“The best bit about living in Swansea is being so close to Gower and other local beaches. My nearest beach when I lived in Cheltenham was Weston-super-Mare so I feel very lucky now and have a great balance between learning, earning and a great lifestyle.”

Rhys Davies, 23 years old, Electrical Apprentice

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗥𝗵𝘆𝘀' 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:

“I’m currently doing an apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering at FSG through Gower College Swansea. I started my apprenticeship three years ago, and I’m in my final year now, so I’m looking forward to being qualified!

“I went to Bishopston Comprehensive School, and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after school. I then went on to college, but realised that the academic path wasn’t really for me, so I changed to a BTEC course which is where I discovered that I really enjoyed the electrical route.

“It was through this course that I began my apprenticeship at FSG, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I really like the opportunity to learn about emerging green technology, which FSG champions, and I also love the community; the team are so welcoming and everyone helps each other. It’s a fantastic place to learn and the supportive network makes it particularly brilliant for those new to industry.

“My favourite building to work on is the Swansea Building Society Arena. It took my breath away when I first walked inside, it’s so impressive and so iconic for the area.”

𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸

To mark National Apprenticeship Week (Feb 10 - 16), we will share a story a day from our fantastic apprentices who are a core part of our team at FSG.

First up is, Cai Davies, 17 years old, Electrical Apprentice

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗶’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆:

“I started my apprenticeship just 4 months ago. I studied maths, history and business for my A-Levels at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe, and decided that I actually wanted to get straight into work.

“My dad’s a carpenter and joiner and did an apprenticeship himself, so he was a great inspiration for me, but I decided I wanted to be an electrician instead.

“It’s challenging at the moment as I get into the swing of things but I am loving it. I love learning about new tech in particular. My family home is a smart home, so it’s great being able to play my part in installing new tech in client premises and seeing it work in larger, office and communal areas.

“I’d like to go further with it and would like to explore electrical system design. Technology is constantly evolving and it’s an exciting time to be in the trade.

“If anyone’s considering an apprenticeship, I’d say go for it! You’re getting paid to learn and having a trade under your belt means you’ll have a job for life.”

Our very own Electrical Services Manager, Cal Hughes-Davies, joined other local businesses for a Wales Business Insider round table discussion yesterday, sharing insights on environmental, social and governance goals.

These are hugely important to us at FSG and it was fantastic being amongst other businesses with a real passion for doing what's best for their individual businesses and clients.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲

We are proud to have funded the roll-out of 63 critical bleed control kits across Swansea City Centre.

An initiative spearheaded by Melanie James, the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan 2024-2025 people can find kits housed within the existing cabinets used for Swansea's defibrillator network. Each life-saving kit will help with providing immediate assistance to victims of catastrophic bleeding caused by accidents such as road traffic collisions, workplace incidents, impalements, dog bites, and knife crime.

Commenting on our support is our head of FM, Luke Davies:

"We’re pleased to be able to support this vital initiative, and we believe that the bleed control kits that we are donating will be a critical resource available for use in emergency situations. Accidents and incidents can happen anywhere, at any time, and with these kits in place in various locations across the city, we're ensuring that the people of Swansea have the best chance of survival in a life-threatening situation.”
