On this day in 1756: Pioneering engineer John Loudon McAdam was born in Ayr. He revolutionised global travel with his invention of "macadamisation."

Before McAdam, roads were mostly muddy, rutted tracks that became impassable in the rain. He discovered that a raised, well-drained foundation topped with tightly packed, crushed stone created a durable, smooth surface. This innovative method completely transformed civil engineering and laid the groundwork for the paved roads we use today.

The next time you enjoy a smooth drive, remember you have a Scotsman to thank 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
