💧 Something new I learned about outside taps and Legionella
Today I met Arthur from CLIRA Ltd, and we had a valuable conversation about Legionella and water hygiene.
When Arthur learned that we operate a pressure-washing business, he highlighted something I’d never properly considered: outside taps are often used seasonally and may naturally go long periods without being turned on.
That’s completely normal and nobody’s fault. However, standing water in little-used pipework is something we as professional contractors should consider before connecting our equipment, particularly as pressure washing creates fine spray and mist.
A few useful reminders for our industry:
✅ Include the water source in pre-start checks
✅ Consider when an outside tap was last used
✅ Where appropriate, flush gently to a drain while avoiding spray
✅ Follow any water-hygiene procedures at the property
✅ Seek specialist advice when unsure
The same awareness may help families bringing outside taps back into use for paddling pools, sprinklers and garden hoses.
This isn’t about blaming or worrying anyone. It’s about tradespeople, businesses and homeowners sharing knowledge and taking sensible precautions together.
