In the news: a blue plaque for Bridgnorth’s boatbuilding past

A little piece of Bridgnorth history has just been recognised.

William Oakes, described as Bridgnorth’s last traditional boatbuilder and one of the town’s important industrial figures, has been honoured with a blue plaque at his former home on Underhill Street.

The house was not just where the Oakes family lived for more than 120 years. It was also the centre of a thriving boatbuilding business on the banks of the River Severn, helping to shape Bridgnorth’s role as an important centre of shipbuilding.

The plaque also celebrates railway artist John Austin, who later lived at the same address.

It is a lovely reminder that some of Shropshire’s most interesting stories are not hidden in museums. They are built into the streets, homes and riverside corners of towns like Bridgnorth.

Here's the catch: some management companies calculate their fee on the gross amount a guest pays.

Pass the Keys calculates it on the net amount, after the booking platform's own fee has already been taken out.

Same-looking percentage, very different bill.
