🐦☕ The Bird Café at Hanley Mill is open! ☕🐦

I left the Merlin Bird ID app listening beside our feeders, and in one wonderfully busy session it recorded an incredible 17 different species:
European Robin, Grey Wagtail, Dunnock, Eurasian Blue Tit, House Sparrow, Eurasian Blackbird, Common Chaffinch, White Wagtail, Coal Tit, Carrion Crow, Meadow Pipit, Common Chiffchaff, Marsh Tit, Eurasian Wren, Great Tit, Eurasian Nuthatch and Eurasian Jay. 💚

Admittedly, the Carrion Crow was probably circling overhead rather than patiently queuing for lunch—but every voice formed part of the same lively Hanley Mill soundscape!

This lovely gathering has now earned its own page in The Living Nature Journal, ready for guests to discover during their stay.

Small seeds, big connections…and another little chapter in the ever-growing story of Magical Hanley Mill. ✨

🌿 WERE YOU WATCHING TOO? 🌿

One of the loveliest things about Hanley Mill is that no two stays are ever quite the same.

A kingfisher flashes along the stream… a deer appears quietly at dusk… an owl calls after dark… a fox slips across the meadow… or perhaps a tiny visitor lands beside you while you’re enjoying your morning coffee. 🦉🦊🦋

Our Living Nature Journal has been growing throughout the year as we record the wildlife that shares Magical Hanley Mill with us — but we’ve realised that some of the very best eyes and ears belong to our guests. 🥰
So we’re giving Guest Sightings its own special place in the journal.
And this is where past guests can join in too!

🦔🌿 THE MAMMALS OF MAGICAL HANLEY MILL 🌿🦌

It isn’t only the birds who call Hanley Mill home… 💚
If you wander quietly enough — particularly around dawn and dusk — you never quite know who might appear.

A rabbit nibbling at the edge of the meadow… a grey squirrel scampering through the ancient oaks… the fleeting glimpse of a muntjac… or, if you’re especially lucky, a beautiful brown hare bounding across the fields. 🐇🌳

And then there are perhaps our sweetest little visitors of all… our hedgehogs. 🦔🥰

Recently we were lucky enough to discover not only a hedgehog visiting the gardens, but three tiny hoglets exploring with their mum — one of those wonderfully simple moments that feels rather magical when you happen to witness it.

They’ve all earned their place in The Living Nature Journal, our growing record of the wildlife that lives alongside us here at Magical Hanley Mill. 📖🌿
And the loveliest thing?
The journal will never really be finished.
There will always be another rustle in the undergrowth, another footprint to discover, another unexpected visitor…

🌿🐦 WOODLAND FRIENDS OF HANLEY MILL 🐦🌿

Surrounded by ancient woodland, Hanley Mill is never truly quiet… you just have to stop and listen. 💚
From the familiar song of the Robin to the tiny Goldcrest, the chatter of the t**s, the unmistakable call of the Nuthatch and the almost magical sight of a Treecreeper spiralling its way up an old tree trunk… these are some of the little characters who share our woodland home. 🌳✨

This is another page from The Living Nature Journal at Magical Hanley Mill — our ever-growing record of the birds, animals, insects and wild discoveries made here throughout the seasons.

The journal lives in our cottages for guests to browse, enjoy and — hopefully — inspire them to wander a little more slowly, listen a little more carefully and see what they can discover during their stay. 🥰

One of the things we're most excited to share with our guests is The Living Nature Journal – a beautiful, ever-growing journal that's waiting in each cottage at Magical Hanley Mill.

From hedgehogs wandering through the gardens at dusk, to hares racing across the fields, squirrels leaping through the ancient trees and shy deer appearing by the streams, Hanley Mill is home to some truly wonderful wild neighbours.
