DID YOU KNOW: when trees are coppiced, new shoots sprout from the trunk, which will eventually form new branches. These new sprouts are very popular with hungry deer and rabbits so a natural way to protect them is to stack the cut timber around the base of the tree in a tent shape so they can grow on the inside without being eaten. This is why you might see lots of 'wigwams' on Ashampstead Common following the recent tree work.

As we approach the ground-nesting season, while walking the paths around the estate, PLEASE KEEP DOGS ON A LEAD to protect vulnerable farmland birds that nest on the ground in open fields and grassland. Skylark, lapwing and grey partridge lay their eggs in shallow scrapes that are almost invisible and even friendly, well-trained dogs can cause harm by running through crops, flushing adult birds from their nests and leave eggs or chicks exposed to cold temperatures and predators.

While most people have packed away their Christmas decorations and won’t think about their tree until November, we have already been out in the field counting the trees in the ground working out how many we will have to sell for Christmas 2026. Luckily it was one of the sunny days this week.

What a great way to start 2026, a cold but beautiful sunny day on the estate. Happy New Year to everyone
