Plodda Falls – then and now 🌿💦

These lovely old photographs were kindly shared with me by a friend who used to live in the village, and I thought it would be nice to compare them with how Plodda Falls looks today.

The older images show the falls as they once were, with the old bridge crossing the gorge, very different from the viewing platform visitors know today.

Swipe through to see my more recent photographs of Plodda Falls now. In one of them, you can even spot a little bit of old iron railing still visible amongst the rocks and greenery.

I love seeing how places change over the years while still remaining so recognisable.

If you’re staying at Pinefield Lodge, Plodda Falls is well worth a visit and isn’t too far a walk away. 🌲💦

Did you know? 🏡📚

The old schoolhouse in Tomich has quite a story behind it.

Lady Tweedmouth is said to have bought uniforms for some of the local schoolchildren so they had something smart to wear to church on Sundays.

It’s lovely seeing the old photographs and imagining what life here would have been like then, especially as so much of the area’s history is still right on our doorstep today.

And speaking of doorsteps… Pinefield Lodge is right next door to the old schoolhouse, so guests are staying right in the middle of all this local history.

One of the best things about staying at Pinefield Lodge is having places like Guisachan right on the doorstep 🐾🌲

Today Daisy, Coconut and Willow came along for a wander around the ruins — an area full of history and, of course, famous as the birthplace of the Golden Retriever.

It’s exactly the kind of place we love showing guests: beautiful Highland scenery, peaceful walks and plenty to explore straight from the local area.

And this walk may just have given me an idea… 😂💛

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly Highland escape, Pinefield Lodge makes a lovely base for exploring Glen Affric, Guisachan and the surrounding area.

One of the best things about staying at Pinefield Lodge is having beautiful Highland walks right on the doorstep 🥾🐾

Today’s walk started from the lodge with Daisy, Willow & Coconut and was only meant to take us as far as Corrie Loch… but we decided to carry on to Dog Falls, and we’re so glad we did.

Beautiful views, peaceful tracks and a proper little Highland adventure 💚

🥃 A little piece of Highland history on our doorstep…

One of the many beautiful walks from Pinefield Lodge takes you past the remains of the Balcladaich illicit wh**ky still, hidden away amongst the trees.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, small hidden stills like this were used across the Highlands to quietly produce wh**ky away from the authorities. Tucked into the woodland beside a huge boulder, you can still see the stone remains today and imagine how well concealed it once would have been. 🌲🥃

It’s one of those little places you could easily walk past without realising the history sitting right beside you.

Just another reason we love this area: beautiful walks, peaceful woodland and fascinating Highland history all around us. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🌿 Did you know Guisachan once generated its own electricity? ⚡

Hidden away in the woodland near the ruins of Guisachan House are the remains of an old hydroelectric system, where the power of the water was once used to provide electricity for the estate.

Today, you can still spot traces of its fascinating past amongst the waterfall, old stonework, machinery and beautiful iron bridge, all slowly being reclaimed by nature.

It’s such a peaceful, atmospheric place to explore and one of the many little pieces of local history right on our doorstep at Pinefield Lodge. 💚

Perfect for a quiet walk, some beautiful photographs and a glimpse into Guisachan’s past.
