L is for LAKE. Coniston is our nearest lake and my favourite lake. But it’s actually Coniston Water. Let’s not split hairs. We say we are going to the lake and everyone knows where we mean. Cycle round it, paddle on it, swim in it, jump off it the jetties or simply walk its shores. There really is something for everyone. It’s only 10mins drive to the southern end of the lake. Unlike other lakes there are so many access points for the public to embrace this beautiful body of water. In summer the local farmer opens up his lake fronted field just past nibthwaite to help ease parking (very cheap to park) and get people enjoying this amazing attraction.

. K is for KINDLING. You’ll be needed kindling to light either the open fire, which is the feature in our cozy one bedroom cottage Tethera. Or you’ll be needing it to fire up the wood fired whirlpool bath hot tub which is Methera’s key selling point. We have an honesty log pile with lovely dry seasoned wood and kindling. Speaking of fire, well fireworks. If your dog hates them we have one cottage remaining to escape those bangs.

J is for JOURNEY AND Junction 36. Most guests pull off theM6 at Junction 36—also known as the “Gateway to the Lakes,” as its the main entry point for travellers heading into the southern Lake District. As you drive down past Ayside the mountains welcome you. Only 30mins from this J36 and you’ll be at Coal Yeat. The age old question asks which is more important journey or the destination? Of course there is beauty in both. This posts highlights the stunning final two miles as you pull off the A road onto the single track fell road. It’s stunning, to some a little scary but along this road you see all sorts. Go slow and soak it up…. The journey is just as beautiful as the destination

bath H is for HOT TUB (and hens). New for July 2026 and exclusive to Methera. The top spec, wonderful wood fired whirlpool bath hot tub is going down a storm with guests. We freshly fill with our spring water for each arrival and fire it up to be up to temp for your arrival. It’s whirlpool bath jets are the perfect was to relax after a day in the lakes. And how could we leave out the hens …. they bob around Coal Yeat and are just wonderful to watch.

G is for GAMES ROOM. We have a shared games room with pool table, ping pong, table football and darts. Perfect for rainy days, family fun and evening entertainment. F is for flora and fauna. Each property has a garden but they are not formal. We let the unique environment speak for itself. Why focus the eye on some imported plant? We mow the lawns but the rest is wild and unique. Look carefully there are so many hidden secrets in the undergrowth. I try to pick wild flowers for incoming guests and leave a posy.

E is for Emma. This is a tough one to write as it’s all about me, your host! I’ve been doing this for 18 years and still enjoy hosting and making your stay in the lakes special. As we live here you’ll see me bobbing around Coal Yeat. Always happy to stop and chat but will equally leave you alone if that’s your preference! I’ll share the ‘locals’ secret places with you. I love the outdoors and watching the changing seasons and nuances of this special place. I hate mayonnaise and enjoy a tipple. I run Coal Yeat with the support of my family (Graham, Peggy and Doris) and look forward to welcoming you to beautiful corner of the Lakes.

so D is for Dog. We have two dogs at Coal Yeat Disco the Black Lab and Samba the White lab. Fun fact is disco shows her teeth not in malice but actually as a smile. It catches people out every time. Samba greets our guests vocally a.k.a.A bark but is soft underneath. Disco had a litter of puppies and our regular guests loved Disco so much their daughter bought one. Dogs very much welcome at Coal Yeat and we look forward to welcoming you all soon

It may surprise you especially to the regulars but we have a cat called Jimmy. Jimmy is shy and if you see him, it’s rare….. if he lets you stroke him it’s even rarer. Jimmy is 10 years old, loves food and sleeping.
