An Ode to a Most Determined Bumblebee

This afternoon there entered, quite without invitation, a Bumblebee of remarkable self-confidence.

He did not hover timidly at the threshold, nor inquire whether his presence might be welcome. Instead, he swept into the house with all the authority of a visiting Duke inspecting a recently acquired estate.

Having completed several circuits of the room, he proceeded to examine the windows, the flowers, the curtains, and, I suspect, the quality of the housekeeping.

He then stationed himself prominently upon the sill, where he appeared to consider himself master of all he surveyed.

His coat was of the finest velvet black and gold, his manners energetic rather than refined, and his opinions, though never verbally expressed, seemed both numerous and firmly held.

One could not help but admire him.

For here was no meek creature blown astray by fortune, but rather a small ambassador from the garden kingdom, arriving with purpose and consequence.

At length, having satisfied himself that the house, its occupants, and their arrangements met with at least provisional approval, he departed, slightly in dismay as being scooped up in a cup, in a thunderous hum of self-importance and returned to his affairs among the roses.

The room seemed strangely quieter after his departure.

And though his visit had been entirely unsolicited, one felt honoured nonetheless.

For there are guests who arrive with apologies,

and there are guests who arrive with character.

The Bumblebee belonged most decidedly to the latter.

Above is the link to the article by Keith Coleman - Jeelek.

As a bonus to our kitchen restoration series, Keith from Jeelek also wrote a wonderful article reflecting on the renovation project from his own perspective.

For me personally, it was genuinely fascinating to read the story through somebody else’s eyes. When you live inside a long restoration, you become so immersed in the daily worries, decisions and chaos that you sometimes forget how remarkable the transformation truly is from the outside.

It was also rather touching to realise how much care, humour and patience the project inspired amongst the people who helped bring it back to life.

We have shared the videos and photos in the article last weeks in drops as a lot to digest. —
I hope you will enjoy this different side of the Old Park kitchen story
as much as I did.

Looking back through the renovation photographs now, it is almost difficult to remember quite how much work went into bringing the old kitchen back to life.

These images capture the quieter in-between moments of the project — the dust, exposed walls, tangled wires, unexpected discoveries and slow rebuilding that so often remain hidden once a room is finally complete.

Old houses rarely reveal their secrets easily, and every stage seemed to uncover another small challenge waiting patiently beneath the surface. Yet there is also something deeply satisfying about watching craftsmanship slowly restore warmth and dignity to a tired space.

We are enormously grateful to everyone who helped guide the kitchen through its rather dramatic transformation.

KITCHEN VOL II
Before vs. after
Please watch the Monday video first.

Nb. the first part with the water tunnel is NOT from here!

What a difference time, patience and craftsmanship can make.

Keith from Jeelek has now also put together a comparison video showing the kitchen before and after renovation — from its rather exhausted former state to the calm and welcoming space it has become today.

Seeing the transformation side by side is genuinely quite moving for us. Old Park has always been a house that reveals itself slowly, and each restored room feels less like something “new” and more like something gently brought back to life.

We are enormously grateful to everyone
who has helped along the way.
