St Gabriel’s wishes everyone a very blessed Feast of St Michael and All Angels (“Michaelmas”). Here’s a poem that reminds us that angels are everywhere. 🪽🪽
*Angels who carry ordinary things pass by*
(Danny O’Neill)
Angels who carry ordinary things pass by.
Their hands smell faintly of iron and rain.
They move like breath along the edge of days.
You hear them in kettles beginning to sigh,
in stairwells where the light learns a new grain.
Angels who carry ordinary things pass by.
They steady the table when grief walks in dry,
set salt back in bowls, return lost keys to plain
places. They move like breath along the edge of days.
They taste of apples, of bread left to lie
cooling. Their wings are quiet as a train
at dawn. Angels who carry ordinary things pass by.
They stand in the pause before you reply,
in the ache behind laughter, the held back refrain.
They move like breath along the edge of days.
When sleep loosens its hold and the dark thins nearby,
you feel a weight lift, a kindness remain.
Angels who carry ordinary things pass by.
They move like breath along the edge of days.
