"We have had an exceptionally positive experience working with Mo Choudhury and the team at MC Architectural Design, and I would have no hesitation in recommending them.
Mo was initially introduced to us by our dental builder. We first engaged MC Architectural Design to prepare the architectural and Building Control drawings required for the conversion and development of our new dental practice. From the outset, Mo demonstrated a very clear understanding not only of the architectural requirements of the project, but also of the particular regulatory, functional and safety considerations associated with developing a healthcare environment.
Mo liaised directly with Building Control during the initial stages of the project and helped us obtain the necessary agreement to progress the scheme. As the project developed, we subsequently appointed him as our Principal Designer. In that capacity, Mo and his team took a very active role in coordinating the design aspects of the project, reviewing progress and ensuring that design-related health and safety considerations were properly addressed. Regular site visits provided an additional layer of professional oversight and assurance that the works remained aligned with the agreed drawings, Building Regulations, the requirements of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and the standards expected by the Health and Safety Executive.
One of the aspects that impressed us most was the clarity with which the relationship was established from the beginning. Mo held several meetings with us on site before and during the project, during which the scope of the work, his expectations of us as clients, the requirements placed upon the building team and, equally importantly, our expectations of MC Architectural Design were discussed openly and in detail. This was then supported by clear written communication. Consequently, there was very little ambiguity about responsibilities or expectations, and we did not experience the unexpected gaps in communication or scope that can so easily complicate a major construction project.
Mo’s communication with Building Control was equally impressive. His experience was evident in the way in which he engaged with the Building Control team promptly, professionally and constructively. Having established professional relationships and an understanding of how Building Control approaches these projects undoubtedly assisted the process, but what was particularly important to us was the effectiveness of the communication itself. Queries were addressed rapidly, information was provided when required and the relationship between the design team, ourselves and Building Control remained extremely constructive throughout. From a client’s perspective, this made what could potentially have been a complex process remarkably smooth.
This became particularly apparent when Building Control identified one or two matters relating to fire safety that required further consideration. Mo did not simply identify the issue and leave the various parties to resolve it independently. He became actively involved in bringing the relevant people together, communicating with Building Control, ourselves, the building team and our independent fire risk assessment professionals to reach an appropriate solution. On several occasions we felt that Mo and his team went considerably beyond what we might reasonably have expected in order to ensure that an issue was properly understood and brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
That approach characterised our experience of MC Architectural Design throughout the project. Whenever an issue arose , including a particular design matter that required reconsideration during the build, Mo and his colleagues were extremely quick to become involved. Their focus was never simply on finding the quickest or easiest solution. They worked with the relevant parties to identify the most appropriate, compliant and practical solution, while maintaining the integrity of the design and the applicable regulatory standards.
As healthcare professionals, our overriding consideration throughout the development of the practice has always been patient safety and the creation of an environment capable of delivering the highest standard of patient care. Mo understood this very clearly. He recognised that regulatory compliance in a healthcare building is not simply a paperwork exercise; ultimately, good design, fire safety, accessibility, appropriate construction and effective governance all contribute to protecting patients, staff and visitors. His approach helped us maintain those standards throughout the project.
We should also specifically acknowledge Simon Rollinson, who worked alongside Mo and has been outstanding. Simon was exceptionally well organised, approachable and clear in his communication with both ourselves and the construction team. He demonstrated an impressive ability to keep track of the detail of a complex project while ensuring that actions were communicated and followed through. Mo and Simon complemented one another extremely well and gave us considerable confidence that matters were being dealt with properly. I am also conscious that there will undoubtedly be other members of the MC Architectural Design team working behind the scenes whom we have not met personally, and the overall quality and responsiveness of the service reflects very positively on the wider organisation.
Perhaps the strongest endorsement I can give Mo is the way in which he deals with people. His style is collaborative, inclusive and solution-focused. He has an unusual ability to bring the different parties around the table, establish what needs to be achieved and then bring the best out of the individuals involved. Rather than creating divisions between client, designer and contractor, he encourages everyone to work towards the same objective. Importantly, that collaborative approach never comes at the expense of standards. Where something needs to be done correctly, Mo is very clear that it must be done correctly.
Throughout our dealings with him, we have found Mo to be highly professional, approachable, extremely trustworthy and very easy to communicate with. His verbal and written communication is excellent, his advice is clear, and his professional judgement has consistently given us confidence. Most importantly, he and his team have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to maintaining high standards while finding sensible and pragmatic ways of achieving them.
Developing a new dental practice is a significant undertaking involving numerous professional disciplines, contractors, regulatory bodies and competing practical considerations. Having an architectural and Principal Designer team capable of bringing those different strands together has been enormously valuable.
Our experience of Mo Choudhury, Simon Rollinson and MC Architectural Design has therefore been excellent. They combine technical professionalism with excellent communication, sound judgement and a genuinely collaborative approach. They bring people together, bring the best out of the project team and, above all, remain focused on achieving the highest possible standard of finished work."
