✨I is for Independent ✨

One of the things we love most about being here is the brilliant collection of small, independent businesses on our doorstep. Not only have we got the Stawley Shop and Tea Room close by but we are are located almost exactly between the towns of Wellington and Wiveliscombe and both are bursting with opportunities to shop local, eat local and support local during your stay. Some of our favourites include:

☕ White Post Cafe
🍽 The Martlet Inn
🍖Thornes Butchers, Wiveliscombe
🛍Ruxstons, Wellington
🍎Wivey Larder, Wiveliscombe
🥖Longstraw Bakery, Wiveliscombe
🥛The Milk Shed Wellington Somerset

Because when you spend your money with a small local business, it doesn’t just disappear into a big company. It helps support a family, a farmer, a producer, a shopkeeper or a small team and helps keep those businesses part of our communities.

H is for hedgerows! 🌳

We coppice our hedgerows on rotation leaving them to regenerate for upwards of 10-15 years to regrow giving a diverse tapestry of hedgerows at different stages. This creates a wide variety of habitats for different wildlife. And the cattle love it too!

Even better, once the cattle have stripped the leaves off the branches, these get chipped providing wood chip which is used as bedding for our cattle in the winter. The following spring, this will get spread on the fields adding the nutrients back to the fields!

♨️ H is for Hot Tubs ♨️

There are hot tubs and then there are wood-fired hot tubs. We've just published a blog on everything we love about our outdoor, wood-fired hot tubs at The Nest and Yonder View. There’s a little anticipation involved before you can sink into that lovely warm water but that’s where the real magic lies. After a day exploring the local area, or even just relaxing at your property, head outside, stoke up the fire and immerse yourself in the warm water. And when the skies are clear, look up and enjoy the dark skies 🌠

Book direct to get the wood fired hot tub experience included at Yonder View or read our blog at https://www.thecottagebeyond.co.uk/blog

G is for Grand Western Canal

The Grand Western Canal stretches for just over 11 miles from the market town of Tiverton meandering through the Devon countryside to the hamlet of Lowdswell near the Somerset border (and only a couple of miles from us). The majority of the tow path is flat and well surfaces making it perfect for a family walk as it is suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, bikes and pushchairs.

It is a firm favourite with us for a family bike ride or run. The Globe Inn Sampford Peverell is just off the tow path and makes a great pit stop to fuel whatever adventure you choose!

Please visit the Grand Western Canal Country Park website for more information: https://www.devon.gov.uk/grandwesterncanal/

G is for Goshawk 🦅

We've spotted some very cool wildlife on our nature cams recently but this one takes top prize for the most wonderful and more surprising! Last week, a goshawk visited Bathealton Stream for a quick wash and cool down twice within half an hour. While there are a couple of small populations of goshawks in the South West, they are most commonly spotted in dense woodlands in Scotland and Northern England. Even there, they are often secretive and hard to spot making this even more exciting! If you are staying with us or are local, keep an eye out and see if you can spot one for yourselves.

🍂🍂5 Things To Do On An Autumn Day 🍂🍂
We’re rather fond of autumn here at Kittisford Barton Farm. Crisp mornings, golden leaves, muddy walks, darker skies and evenings that are made for hot tubs and cosy swims.
If you’re joining us this autumn, here are five of our favourite ways to spend the day:
🧚 Fairy door hunting – head into the woods and see if you can find all 12 hidden fairy doors.
🏊 An evening swim – switch off the lights in the spa hall, turn on the pool lights and swim as the sun sets.
🌌 Stargazing from the hot tub – we’re right on the edge of the Exmoor Dark Skies Reserve, so autumn evenings are perfect for looking up from the warmth of the wood-fired hot tubs.
🥾 A proper welly walk – borrow a pair of our wellies and head down through the farm to Watery Lane. Mud is very much part of the experience!
🥩 Dinner at the pub – finish the day at The Martlet Inn with a Dexter steak from our very own organic herd, reared less than three miles away from the pub.
Autumn might mean shorter days, but there’s still plenty to enjoy here. 🍁

F is for Family ❤️
The Cottage Beyond is, and always has been, a family-run business.

The Cottage Beyond was the Ker family home until 2012 and what began with Alan and Christine has grown into something that now involves the next generation too. As Alan and Christine begin to take a well-earned step towards retirement, the next generation of John, Emellia and Rachael are helping to bring the business forward adding The Nest and Yonder View.

And it seems the generation beyond is already keen to get involved! In school holidays, they are fetching logs for the hot tubs, helping in the garden, making beds and of course, making the most of the pool! 🥰🏊‍♀️

The Cottage Beyond is very much a family affair, and we feel incredibly lucky that so many of the people who help make it what it is are the people closest to us.

Here's to the next chapter and maybe even a few more generations to come. ❤️
