Wells RNLI’s inshore lifeboat Peter Wilcox launched on Saturday 18 April after being paged at 5:16pm to assist two adults, a child and two dogs cut off by the incoming tide on the west side of Wells Harbour.

The volunteer crew of three launched from the North slipway at 5:26pm and were quickly on scene, where the group were already knee-deep in rising water.

The casualties were safely brought aboard the lifeboat and returned to the station, arriving at 5:40pm.

All were landed safely and did not require any medical assistance. The lifeboat was rehoused, refuelled and ready again for service by 6:00pm.

Mandy Humphreys, Wells RNLI Water Safety Officer, said: ‘Situations like this can develop very quickly along Wells and the surrounding coastline. It is absolutely vital to return to the main beach or dry sand at least four hours before high tide time. This is especially important over the next few days, as we are seeing larger than usual tides which can cover the sands faster and cut people off much earlier than expected.

The channels and ‘low ways’ can fill rapidly and change position, even for those who know the area well. Please check tide times, keep a close eye on your surroundings, and don’t leave it too late to head back.’

Anyone can get caught out by the tide, even experienced visitors. Please plan ahead and stay safe 💙
