With colder weather on the way, a few simple checks around the home can help you prepare for winter.

🔧 Know where your stop tap is
💧 Check for visible leaks
🥶 Protect vulnerable pipework
🚰 Don't ignore dripping taps or small leaks

🔧 DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR BOILER PRESSURE SHOULD BE?

Your boiler’s pressure gauge can give you a useful indication of how your heating system is doing.

🏠 For many domestic boilers, the pressure is typically around 1–1.5 bar when the system is cold — but always check your boiler manufacturer's guidance, as this can vary.

⚠️ If the pressure is regularly too high or too low, keeps dropping, or you notice leaks, it could be a sign that something needs checking.

⚠️ IS YOUR BOILER TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING?

As we head into the colder months, look out for:

🔊 Strange or unusual noises
🔥 Poor heating performance
💧 Leaks or visible water
⚠️ Boiler repeatedly switching off

🔥 GAS SAFETY WEEK | TAKE NO CHANCES

Last Friday, our engineer was called to a rental property for a second opinion following concerns raised during a previous inspection.

The previous engineer had recorded high readings and classified the situation as At Risk, but the boiler had been left operational.

During our inspection, we identified several serious defects with the flue installation:

⚠️ A flue terminal positioned too close to an opening into the property
⚠️ A detached seal at the flue outlet elbow
⚠️ The main flue pipe only partially engaged into the elbow — around 1cm
⚠️ The potential for products of combustion to escape and recirculate into the property

Following our assessment, our engineer classified the appliance as an Immediately Dangerous (ID) situation, meaning it should not have remained in service.

Gas appliance and flue defects can create a serious risk of carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide can’t be seen, smelt or tasted, which is why proper installation, checks and maintenance are so important.

🏠 If you’re a landlord: make sure gas appliances, pipework and flues provided for your tenants are properly checked and maintained by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
