🐾✨ Whitby's Polar Bear Tale: A Historic Gem! ✨🏰

During your stay at Amber Cottage discover a hidden tale above Holland & Barrett—the story of a polar bear perched majestically, silently narrating the town's rich history.

In the 1700s and 1800s, Whitby thrived as a whaling port, led by the Scoresby family. William Scoresby Senior, a skilled navigator, and his scientist son, William Junior, embarked on expeditions capturing over 533 whales.

During one mission, an unexpected shipmate joined—the polar bear cub, tamed with whale meat treats. Back in Whitby, the bear became a sensation, swimming in the River Esk and delighting tourists. Yet, a fateful day saw the bear break free, causing chaos in the old town.

Cornered by locals, the bear's fate hung in the balance until Scoresby appeared. The bear, now fully grown, licked Scoresby's hand, calmed, and was safely leashed away.

Despite the heartwarming bond, authorities deemed the bear too risky, sending it to the Tower Zoo in London. Today, the model polar bear proudly stands—a symbolic nod to Whitby's enthralling past. 📜🐻✨
