🌹 D-DAY - 6th June 1944 🌹
Then and Now
Today the beaches of Normandy are places of peace, where families gather and children play. Yet on these same shores, 82 years ago, thousands of Allied servicemen landed under fire to begin the liberation of Europe.
Among them was my Nan’s brother, Marine W. H. Ford of No. 45 Royal Marine Commando, who gave his life in Normandy on 9th June 1944, just days after the D-Day landings.
Standing beside his grave was a moment I will never forget. It brought home the reality that every headstone represents a son, brother, husband or friend whose sacrifice helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.
The photographs show the contrast between then and now. The beaches may be peaceful, but they will forever be sacred ground.
Today we remember not only the operation itself, but the men who never came home.
