It's all about the Base (& the Grass of Course : )
We only use materials built to last on our artificial lawn projects.
To give you a better idea, here's an image of the materials under your grass, that you don't see.
A. Garden Bed (if you decide to have one). Some people prefer to run their grass right up to the fence to make use of their outdoor space.
B. Hidden Concrete Edging. This is essentially a frame that holds together your base materials. We use concrete as it's built to last. It will not rot and perish like wood edging and when we install a concrete edge adjoining your paving, you will not experience w**d issues. Always ask your installer what edging they intend to use as many installers don't mention this prior to installation. Understandably you may have a brick, stone, sleeper, aluminium edge etc., however you will need an edge to fasten your grass to (which is hidden). It does cost slightly more than wood edging, however if longevity is more important you, it is the best option.
C. MOT Type 1 Sub-Base. MOT Type 1 is a sub base that is formed using recycled crushed concrete and consists of rubble of varying size, from 40mm right down to dust. It compacts well to form a solid base which makes it an ideal sub base for large and small jobs.
D. Granite Dust (Binding Layer). Grano Dust is a gritty fine aggregate, roughly 6mm to dust and usually formed from stone such as limestone or granite. A good grano dust has a generous grading with enough larger particles to give it strength but plenty of smaller fines to ensure a tight finish.
Both C. MOT Type 1 & D. Granite Dust are porous, therefore any rain water will pass through these materials and into the ground. They will also dry out much quicker than sharp sand are not fertile materials like sharp sand which love a good w**d or ten once the sun starts shining.
Both of these materials are compacted with a whacker plate to ensure a solid base. The granite dust is then given a final level off, w**d membrane added, then your grass laid and installed. (Stay tuned to find out more about this process).
Hope this helps you to understand this part of the process better,
