President Donald Trump is set to make an historic second state visit to the United Kingdom from 16 to 18 September 2025. Invited by King Charles III, the trip will see Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted at Windsor Castle. This event breaks with recent tradition—US presidents in a second term do not usually receive full state visit honours.
Here’s what is known so far:
📅 Schedule of Key Events
Tuesday 16 September
The President and First Lady arrive in the evening.
They will be met by the U.S. Ambassador and the Lord-in-Waiting on behalf of the King.
No public-facing events are planned; the Trumps will stay on the private Windsor Castle estate overnight.
Wednesday 17 September
Morning: The Prince and Princess of Wales will greet the President and First Lady at Windsor Castle.
Formal royal welcome by King Charles and Queen Camilla, including a carriage procession with members of the Royal Family, military salutes and ceremonial elements.
Private visit to St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle to lay a wreath at the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II.
Flypast featuring UK & US military aircraft.
Evening: State banquet at Windsor Castle. Speeches will be made.
Thursday 18 September
The President will travel to Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country residence.
Bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer; this includes a guard of honour, viewing of the Winston Churchill archives, and a business reception.
Mrs. Trump is scheduled for cultural/royal engagements, including a tour of the Royal Library at Windsor Castle and time in Frogmore Gardens, with members of the Scout Association.
The formal conclusion and farewell ceremonies will close out the visit.
🔒 Security & Context
Windsor Castle is being used in place of Buckingham Palace (which is under refurbishment) for many ceremonial aspects of the visit.
Significant security measures are expected, given the profile of the visit and potential protests.
📌 Why This Visit Matters
It’s unprecedented: no US President has had a second state visit under a British monarch in modern times.
It comes at a sensitive political moment in the UK, with domestic issues, foreign policy debates, and public opinion playing a role in how the visit is perceived.
Diplomatic and trade opportunities are expected to be central. Several reports note that UK-US cooperation on technology, nuclear energy, and bilateral trade is likely to be advanced during this visit.
