From 1 October 2026, the time limit for bringing most employment tribunal claims doubles from three months to six. In plain terms, a dismissal you handle this winter could still turn into a claim well into next summer, particularly once the twelve week ACAS conciliation period is added on top.

Nothing about the change asks you to do anything. It does make three habits more valuable than they used to be.

Keep your paperwork longer. Notes, minutes and appraisals need to outlive the six month window that many policies quietly assume.

Write decisions down at the time, rather than reconstructing them months later when somebody asks.

Take advice before the dismissal instead of after the claim.
