Many climbers layer themselves when a branch touches the ground, forming a root at that point. If you spot any of these shoots with roots already forming, peg them directly into the soil or into a pot of compost sunk into the ground. In the autumn cut the young plant away from the parent, over-winter in a sheltered spot and plant out in the spring. 🌾🌸🌹🍀🌷🍃🌿🌾🌱🌼

Climbing and rambling roses produce so much growth at such a rate this time of year that if you don't tie them in regularly they trail all over other plants and catch on clothing. Wherever possible tie in the stems as close to the horizontal as possible. 🌼

Remove any dead or damaged growth, cutting to a stem joint or leaf and shape up the rest of the plant. If you have a mature shrub that you want to rejuvenate, cut one in three of the main stems down almost to the base, selecting the oldest and thickest for removal. Use loppers if the stems are very thick, or a pruning saw.⁠ After pruning feed with a general fertiliser. The new growth produced over summer will flower next year. 😀

Deadheading is a regular task this time of year as some flowers go over.⁠ You can extend the flowering period for many perennials, repeat flowering roses and annuals by removing old flowers as soon as they fade.⁠ This prevents the flower's energy going into seed production and channels it into new flower production for later in the summer and autumn. Most dead- heading can be done with secateurs, cutting back to just above strong buds lower down the stems.

You can be quite drastic with lilacs at this time of year, just after they have flowered but early enough for the plant to make new growth over the summer. Saw them right down to about 50 cm from the base and a mass of new shoots will regrow. You should thin out those that are growing inwards across the centre of the plant to give a better shaped shrub. 🌾🌸🌹🍀🌷🍃🌿🌾🌱🌼

The sooner the side-shoots are removed, the less of a shock it is to the plant. Bend the shoot from one side with your thumb and forefinger and pinch them out. ⁠Larger shoots can be cut off with secateurs. If you do use secateurs on tomatoes, dip them in a weak solution of disinfectant after each cut to prevent spreading virus among plants. ⁠Tomatoes are very prone to picking up viruses - one of the reasons they are used in plant research work.
