😮 Transformation Tuesday!

What a difference! Last week our Supervisor Nathan tackled what appeared on the surface to be a well kept hedge of bamboo - but there was no doubt this brutish Fishpole bamboo was about to cause serious damage. A gruelling bit of hand digging along with some help from the ever skillful Jim on the excavator and the results are fantastic! The homeowner can now rest easy and prep their home for a stress free sale.

What's hiding underground?

Most invasive plants don't stop where the stems end. Whether it's Japanese knotweed, running bamboo or horsetail, what you can see above ground is often only a small part of the plant. The real work is happening underneath, where roots and rhizomes spread through the soil, sometimes well beyond the visible growth.

That's why simply cutting plants back rarely solves the problem. Unless the underground system is dealt with, they'll often come straight back. It's something we see on almost every job we carry out.

🌿 You don’t always realise how much space bamboo has taken… until you get it back!

Our customers are often amazed at the difference once a bamboo infestation has been removed - and these fantastic before-and-after shots from Site Supervisor Nathan really show why. This running bamboo had spread much further than it might have appeared at first glance, quietly taking over valuable garden space. Now that space has been recovered - the difference is huge! 🙌

A great reminder that bamboo can spread well beyond where you originally planted it,and that dealing with it properly can make a big difference to your property.

Q: "Will Japanese knotweed disappear if I keep cutting it back?"

A: The short answer is no.

Cutting back the visible stems doesn't remove the underground rhizome system. While it may temporarily reduce the amount of growth, the plant will usually return because the rhizomes remain alive beneath the surface. This is why effective management focuses on the underground network rather than the growth you can see.

Our Site Supervisor Joe filmed some great footage while removing running bamboo for a customer.

The bamboo had already been “removed” by another contractor. Unfortunately, what was left behind was an extensive rhizome system beneath the surface. Without methodically removing the rhizomes, running bamboo will simply keep producing new shoots, even if everything above ground has gone.

It's something we come across more often than you'd think, and it's why proper removal is about much more than clearing the visible growth. Expert removal can seem more expensive at first, but paying to have the same problem dealt with twice rarely works out cheaper.

It's peak growing season for Japanese knotweed!

What starts as a few shoots in spring can quickly turn into a dense stand over two metres high by mid-summer.
This is often the time of year people first notice it. Growth is at its fastest, and the bright distinctive zig-zag stems and large shield-shaped leaves are much easier to recognise.

If you've spotted a fast-growing plant taking over part of your garden, now is a good time to have it identified. It's usually much easier to deal with before it becomes a bigger problem.

Did you know Japanese knotweed can affect selling your house? We regularly get calls from people who only come across this when they’re already in the process of trying to sell.

Mortgage lenders will usually ask if it’s present on or near the property, and it also comes up when completing the TA6 form during a sale.

Knotweed isn’t always obvious either. It spreads underground and can sit dormant for years before showing clear signs.
