Noting today’s 80th anniversary of the bombing of the Vickers factory at Brooklands, you may be interested in the following brief account from my father:
The day Vickers Brooklands was bombed - 04-09-1940

Arthur Craven was taken on as an engineering apprentice at the Vickers aircraft factory at Brooklands. During his lunch hour on the day of the bombing, Arthur had taken time out to see a friend’s new motorcycle. He was late getting back to Vickers and as he approached the factory, the bombs started falling. Arthur and friends jumped in the nearest ditch and took cover. The whole raid was over very quickly. There were many fatalities and casualties. When Arthur eventually got to the workshop, the machine he would have been using at the time had taken a direct hit. Arthur went on to run an engineering company until 1980 and since then as chairman of Lansbury Estates, Woking.
